Playdough, that's all it took!

Want hours of good entertainment for your kids? No I am not talking about putting on another show for them, but Playdough!

I know some people do not like the stuff, the mess the little pieces, the smell.. the risk of kids eating it. We decided to be brave and we made our own play dough. Carrie posted the recipe on her cute blog here.

So we got started. At first I wondered if it was ever going to get thick, than slowly little balls seemed to be forming but it just didn't look right. I began to wonder how I messed it up. When I dumped the blob out of the pan Lucas saw it and said, "I am afraid to play with that." And I must admit I was thinking the same thing. It was disgusting and sticky.... but as I kept kneading it then magically it was perfect!

The perfect playdough, great soft texture, not all crumbly.. and those few bites that Alex might have eaten (shh don't tell) won't kill her.

And I am writing this post while my kids are still playing with the playdough almost two hours later.
The Recipe: (I doubled the recipe)
Koolaid Playdough

1 Cup white flour
1 Cup water
1/4 Cup salt
3 Tbs vegetable oil
1 heaping T. cream of tartar (essential for good texture)
1 package Kool-aid (generic brand works great)

Mix all together in a medium sauce pan and whisk until smoothish. Cook and stir constantly over medium heat until dough starts to gather into a ball (takes 2-4 minutes). Remove from pan and knead (or let sit until cool enough to knead) until it looks like playdough. It's ready!

  2. While playdough has been essential to my daughter's therapy, I hate the stuff. She eats it. She throws it. She carries it everywhere so it gets into everything and everything gets into it. But boy does she love the stuff!

  3. Ethan really loves play dough too, but I haven't been brave enough to give it to Madeline yet. Maybe next year . . . :)

    Cute playdough family too!

  4. Isn't this stuff the greatest? It solves a lot of bored summer afternoons over here, too. Plus that kool-aid gives it a super yummy smell!

  5. Very cool! I didn't have your blog address... but I figured it out off of your comment. Impressive, huh? (I'm not as computer savvy as you are)

  6. That is really cool. I am too lazy to do that. haha. I would just buy it. Stinky and all. But at least the homemade stuff is "edible" so to speak. ;)
