Old School Blogging: Randomness

It is time for some Old School Blogging hosted by Elaine of the Miss-Elaine-ous Life.  This month her co-host is Julie from Wine to Mom.  Join in the fun!

If you could be on a reality show which one would you choose?  My first thought is American Idol- but well I can't sing that well and I am too old.  I think it would be fun to be on Wipeout or even Fear Factor (is that even on anymore?).  I once even looked into the application for Fear Factor but never did it in the end.
Image from here
Name one thing you have saved from your childhood.  My blankie- still have it, big huge hole in the middle and all.

If you life had a theme song what would it be? I honestly have no idea on this one.  I really am not a huge music person and always forget the words to songs anyways (ask anyone that knows me well).  So yeah, sorry nothing.  Obviously Idol would not be my thing.

Where is your happy place?  At home, sitting on my couch wrapped up in a blanket reading a book.  I could be so content doing that a lot more than I do.

What is one thing about your home that you and your spouse disagree on?  The laundry--where I put it or should say don't put it way too many times when it is done.
It has been a particularly bad laundry week with Ryder being sick-keeping it real
What is your favorite fruit?  Watermelon- I could eat that anytime.  It's really good with a little feta cheese sprinkled on it too.

Bowtie or regular tie?  Regular tie

Mexican or Italian (food not men)?  That is tough as I will always go back to Italian as my comfort food, but if I am going out to eat I think I would pick Mexican more often than Italian, especially living in SoCal we have some good Mexican food.

Where do you want to go on summer vacation?  I want to go to Hawaii or Europe.  One of those may never happen, the other we are planning on in about 5 years when Ryder is old enough to do everything we want to while there.

What are your go-to shoes in your closet?  My black and white slip ons- mostly because they are slip ons and easy to put on.  If I am actually going out though and not just throwing on shoes, it would be one of the pairs of my boots.

How would you answer?  I am particularly interested in what your song would be, as I bet I will love all of your choices and wonder why I didn't think of that.

Old School Blogging- Reflections

I am linking up with Elaine of the Miss-Elaine-ous Life for some old school blogging.  Join and and link up at her site.

Who do you idolize?
You know, I don't know if I really idolize anyone.  I definitely don't idolize celebrities, never have. I remember in grade school when my friend insisted I had to tell which New Kid on the Block was my favorite, and I really couldn't as I could care less about them (I don't even think I knew all of their names).  I think there are people I am amazed by and would love to follow their examples, but wouldn't say I idolize them.

What is something you are really proud of that you have accomplished?
Being a mother to my kids, I don't always do it perfectly, okay check that, I never do it perfectly, but I try and most of the time I love it and to see their success and the good kids they are, it makes me proud.   Oh and I hope to add writing and getting my book published to this list sometime this year!

What is something you are not so proud of?
The times when I have unintentionally offended someone and the times that I have put others things before what matters most.

Who was your best friend when you were 5, 6 or 7- tell something about them.
My best friend at that age was my friend Jill, I have actually blogged about her here.
This picture was from 4th grade- but we were friends at younger ages too.
What is one thing you wish you could still do but seems impossible right now?
Well not a still do but still have-- a flat stomach.  I think short of a tummy tuck and it will never be like it was before I had babies.

If you could choose what would be your last meal?
I would have a hard time picking one thing, so how about a super fancy buffet where I can just pick and choose everything I want.  I know what a cheap answer, but it is true, I LOVE buffets!

What are two or three jobs that you have liked?
I really haven't had that many jobs in my life; I like being a photographer.  I enjoyed my data entry job- I worked for a small company that was making physical catalogs into on-line catalogs (yes that dates me and I bet that company doesn't exist anymore), and I have a love/hate relationship with my job as a foster care worker.

What is one job that you did not like?
Probably my job as a foster care worker.  It was my first real job out of college, and it felt good to help people, but it was also horrible and horrific the things I saw and the people I had to deal with (both clients and other agencies).

What is your least favorite chore around your house?
Putting laundry away!  My bedroom floor can attest to that.  I do have cute laundry room decor at least... but still doesn't make me want to put the clothes away.
You can read the tips at this post here
How tall are you?  Do you wish you were taller?  Shorter?
I am 5'5" (barely probably more like 5'4 1/2") and most of the time I am just fine with it.  My husband is 6'8" and so while you think that would make me feel short, it has actually had just the opposite effect and I think I am taller than I actually am.  I wouldn't mind being a few inches taller.

What is one of your favorite quotes on love, life or motherhood (choose one)?

Do you have a favorite quote?  What would you eat for your last meal?  I would love to know!

Old School Blogging: Five Unknown Things

For this month's Old School Blogging, hosted by Elaine and this month Nicole of Moments that Define Life we are supposed to share 5 things that people might not know about us.  When you have been blogging for almost 6 years (will be 6 years on the 23rd of this month), it starts to seem like there probably isn't anything you don't know about me, but I'll try.

1. My freshmen year of college I thought I was going to graduated in communications, specifically public relations.  I was even part of the Student Public Affairs society.  But after one class which my grade started off good then quickly turned awful, I decided Public Affairs was not for me.
Now 15 years later I am serving as my Stake Public Affairs Social Media Specialist for my church for my entire city.  I guess Public Affairs is once again for me.
Random picture of me and my best friend Amy from freshmen year
2. If you have read my blog for a while, or know me than you know this-- but if you are new.. I had open heart surgery when I was 5-years-old.  I actually have what is called Shone's Syndrome.  Thankfully my surgery at 5 was a huge success and I have been fine ever since.

3. I am the 5th of 6 kids.  I loved growing up in a big family, though most of my older siblings went gone off to college when I was still in grade school, so it often didn't seem nearly as big as it was.

4. I have never drank alcohol, never smoked or never tried drugs in my life and never plan too.  It is probably a good thing too as I definitely have more of an addictive personality; just ask my husband about how much I play some of the silly games on my iPad.

5. I really am not that neat of a person.  Thankfully my husband is really clean and his influence has rubbed off on me over the years.  I am scared to think what my home would look like if I were married to a slob.

So there ya go, did you know those things?  Tell me something about you that I might not know.

A Few of My Favorite Things: Old School Blogging

I am linking up with some Old School Blogging today with Elaine and this time's co-host Krystyn of Really Are you Serious. #OSBlog

This time it is all about favorites.

FAVORITE:
1. Sit down restaurant: I love going out to eat so this could be about any- but let's go really high end and say, Flemmings- super fancy, amazing service and food but definitely a very rare occurrence as it is extremely expensive.

2. Cookie- sugar cookies with yummy frosting, though No Bake Cookies are a close second

3. Bath Product Scent- um I really have hardly any sense of smell, so I honestly don't really think about this, so something more neutral, not too flowery as since I can't smell very well I wouldn't realize if it was too much.

4. TV Shows: Person of Interest, Marvel's Agent of Shield, Downton Abbey,  and my guilty pleasure Scandal.

5. Flower/plant-any sort of flowering tree, I love it when they are in bloom.

6. Bad-for-me-snack- crackers and cream cheese, or really any kind of cheese, I love cheese.

7. Magazines- I don't get any, I used to get Reader's Digest and loved that. I do like looking through People at the doctor's office

8. Hobby: Photography (though it's a business too), reading, writing, tole-painting (painting on wood)

9. Holiday: Christmas, I love decorating for Christmas and our three Christmas trees, and I love the excitement of the kids, the spirit of Christmas, and of most importantly celebrating our Savior's birth

10. Girls Night Out Activity- a crafting night, where we all get together and bring projects we are working on, eat snacks and visit and talk.

11. Date Night- Dinner and a movie is definitely our most common date night, but really I am up for anything as I always have fun with my husband as he really is my best friend.  We have had a lot of fun hitting up Knotts or Six Flags just the two of us.
Date night about to go on Superman
Join in with some Old School Blogging and would love to know what your favorite holiday is?

Old School Blogging: Fall Questions

Yesterday was the first day of fall. I love fall!  The changing leaves, the color weather.... okay I live in SoCal we don't really get any chaining leaves until December of January (yes some of our trees lose leaves), but still I love fall.  In honor of fall, I am joining Elaine of  Miss-Elanie-ous Life for Old School Blogging. #OSBlog

1. What fall traditions do you have?  Every year we always visit a pumpkin patch.  The patch has changed over the years, sometimes huge farms with lots of fun things and other years more of the carnival lot style ones, but we began doing this when Lucas was just barely over 1-year-old.

Alex's first trip to a pumpkin patch- about 11 months old

2. What is your favorite fall recipe? I don't know if I really have a favorite fall recipe.. I did love my mom's homemade grape juice and applesauce every fall though, plus pears from our pear trees.  Those are the things I associate with fall.

3. What is your favorite fall photo (or photos) you've taken.

This will always be a favorite- Eric and Lucas at hist first pumpkin patch-this was actually taken with my Canon Film Camera.
Lucas and dad

Here is another I love, showing a California fall-- yes we do get leaves that fall, but yes we are often in short sleeves when playing with them.
IMG_7399_2

4. Football- love it or hate it?  LOVE it!  Huge college football fan, love my BYU Cougars. Every week my husband and I watch the game together. Not only do I watch but I tweet, I listen to the post game, and I read about the games.... yeah, I am a fan.
Eric and I at one of the recent bowl game a couple of years back
5. What was one of your favorite Halloween costumes as a kid?  I can't really remember what I was many of the years, I do remember though that we never really went to the store and bought costumes; we always picked from the big box of costumes and dress up clothes and would come up with something creative.

6. Pumpkins or Ghosts or both?  A little of both, but definitely more pumpkins and cute fall decor and the few ghosts I have are cute ones.  The blue pumpkin is a dollar store pumpkin that I painted- you can see my for tutorial for how to paint dollar store pumpkins.

7. What's your favorite fall fashion item (boots? scarves, sweaters?) Definitely boots! I am just itching for it to get cooler so I can wear my boots!

8. Is leaf pile jumping your thing or not?  Would be if we had leaf piles... I guess we kind of do in January.  Thinking of this is inspiring me to take a trip back up the mountain soon for a fun photo shoot.  Lucas wasn't sure if it was his thing when he was little and we actually lived in a place that had a real fall.
IMG_0959
Lucas wasn't so sure about the leaves

Happier now
IMG_0283
Alex in 2010 when we went to Chicago in October for my sister's wedding
9. Is "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" a must watch at your house?   If we happen to turn the TV on when it is on, we will definitely watch it, but don't really go out of our way to see it.

10. What are you going to be for Halloween this year (or your kids)?  Me probably nothing, my kids.. no idea yet!  Have been starting to ask but no one really has any ideas this year.  I loved my kids costume two-years-ago when they all coordinated.
We even acted out a little story.
So there is my Old School Blogging Fall edition.  Do you have a favorite fall tradition?

Old School Blogging: Summer Questions

I am joining Elaine of The Miss Elaine-ous Life for some Old School Blogging.

What was your favorite thing you did alone this summer?   Read books, my kids would be playing together or watching a movie and I would sneak away and read a book.  You can always see what I have been reading on Goodreads.  I also did puzzles, lots of puzzles.

What was your favorite thing you did as a family this summer?  Definitely our trip to Utah and Yellowstone.  We went and visited with Eric's family in Utah and then met up with my entire family (for the first time in many years) and had a big reunion in Yellowstone.  It was so fun being with everyone and we packed a ton of fun into the days we were there.  Here's a fun little video of just one of our days of fun.
What books did you read this summer? Well I guess I have to tell now, huh?  From first to last starting in May, when our summer began:  Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson; The Quantum Breach by Denver Acey;  Sense and Sensibility a Latter Day Tale by Rebecca Jamison; How Much Do You Love Me? by Paul Mark Tag; The Four series by Veronica Roth; Willow Springs by Carolyn Steele; and Hope After Suicide by Wendy Parmley

What do you WISH you had done this summer?  Got a few more organizational projects finished and the kids rooms cleaned out a little better.

What movies did you see this summer (if any)? Defenders of the Galaxy most recently, the newest X-men movie, Planes Fire and Rescue and I am sure a few others I am forgetting

Where did you travel this summer? We went to Utah and Yellowstone and the beach once when we had company in town.
My entire side of the family- my parents, six siblings, in-laws and lots of grandkids
What was your favorite treat (as in dessert) this summer? ice-cream, with lots of fudge sauce on it.

What did you celebrate this summer? The 4th of July of course and 13 years of marriage

Did you grow anything this summer?  Other than my children who always seem to be getting bigger-nope.

What is a favorite post (if you blog) that you wrote this Summer?  That is a tough one.. in all honesty, I felt like I kind of sucked at blogging this summer, but there were a few posts I did like:
Our Yes Day - definitely a very fun end of summer tradition
Cookie Goodness- just a fun post showing our lazy summer days
  and

What is a favorite photograph that you took this summer?  I am a photorapher- do you know how hard it is to pick one.. so I am cheating and picking one from each summer month (our summer began in May)
May: My son's 4-year-old photo shoot
KG4A0988
June- Father's Day picture- favorite because of the people in it
KG4A1407
July: One of the many amazing things to see in Yellowstone- this place seemed like an alien world
KG4A2478 (1)
August: My baby going off to preschool!
What do you want to do next summer?  Have our traditional Utah cousin get tougher, this last summer with the timing of other trips and one of the families moving, we didn't end up doing our true yearly Utah trip.  Lucas keeps saying he wants to go to SanFrancisco- so maybe we will have to take a road trip there.

How about you, is there anything you didn't do this summer that you wish you had?

We Want to Know Wednesday: Brands and Jobs

Love linking up with Kenzie and Sciptor for We Want To Know Wednesday.  Here are this week's questions.
Incognitus Scriptor
1. Are you brand loyal?  Yes and no, there are some things with food that I do prefer a certain brand, but really overall I am more than happy buying store brand to save some money.  I am definitely very loyal to Apple and Canon though.  Won't find a PC or Nikon in this house.
IMG_8396
2. Tell us about your first job?  My very first job was as a newspaper girl; I delivered the papers to about 40 houses on my street.  During the week it was an afternoon paper, so right after school. Saturday and Sunday were morning papers.  The Sunday paper around Christmas was always so horribly fat with ads I could usually only fit about 8 in my bag.  I would have to carry two bags and wobble down the street; then come back load up again and deliver the rest.  My street didn't have sidewalks and everyone had big front yards so riding a bike wasn't really an option.  I was the best paper girl and if it even looked like rain I would bag the papers and put them in everyone's screen doors.

3. Do you have any tattoos?  Nope and never will- though I have some pretty awesome scars (thanks to open heart surgery)
The top of my scar- goes down to a few inches over my belly button
4. How long do you spend on your appearance each day?  If I averaged the week out it would probably be about 20 minutes.  Most days I spend about 5 minutes doing quick makeup and running a brush through my hair.  On Sundays or when I am feeling ambitious I curl my hair, and spend a little more time on makeup so about a hour.
5. What is one thing you have to do before leaving your house each day?  I initially thought getting dressed, but that isn't true as I have had had many school drop-offs in my pajamas (and we know I have a pajama history)... so probably putting my contacts in, otherwise it would not be a good idea to let me drive.

Would love to hear, what was your first job?

Old School Blogging: Holiday Edition

Don't forget, tomorrow is the last day to link up with Week 2 of the Review Extravaganza!  It isn't too late to jump in and just recap the first 6 months with us now.

I am linking with Elaine and this month Kir for some Old School Blogging- a Holiday Edition.

First things first: 1 Holy Night or 8 Crazy Ones? (Do you Celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, both?)
  Christmas here

Peppermint or Chocolate?
Chocolate for sure! I actually am not really a candy cane fan

Sing us into the Holiday Season, what is your favorite Carol this time of year?
I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas.... which is ironic since I live in SoCal now and well don't really want a white Christmas

Tell us about a Favorite Family or Personal Holiday Tradition
I think it has to be our Christmas Eve traditions; we read the true Christmas story to the light of a fireplace and then drink hot chocolate (or egg nog) and open Christmas Eve pajamas
Look at this adorable picture from TWO years ago
C’mon you remember your favorite  (Christmas, Hanukkah) gift, tell us all about it:
I think it would have to be my bike when I was about 9 years old. I really wanted a new one, as I had been using my brother's old junky bike which was now too small.  I remember coming into the family room Christmas morning and didn't see a bike so said, well I guess I didn't get it.  Only to have everyone laugh as right in front of the tree, covered only by a sheet was obviously my bike.

That magical moment? (Your favorite scene from a Holiday movie…it’s okay if you have 2)
You know it has been a while since I have watched any Holiday movies, but in most there is always that moment when the two main characters realize they are in love, always love that moment. Honestly drawing a blank on any specifics

Kissing under the mistletoe?  Who do you hope is standing underneath (We know it’s normally your spouse, if it did not have to be, who would you choose?)
Honestly even the thought of kissing someone else totally weirds me out.  I guess I had better hope nothing ever happens to Eric as I can't imagine kissing anyone else.

Swans a swimming, lords a leaping, golden rings; which gift of the 12 days of Christmas would you like most?
Golden rings for sure; not really a gold fan but could easily sell these and get something I really want.

Play Secret Santa, what inappropriate gift would you love to give this year?
Probably gift myself a little something to wear, which would actually be a gift for my husband.

Martha Stewart or the Grinch? What is your decorating style? (Pictures would be awesome!)
Martha Stewart- have three trees and decorations everywhere

What is ONE WORD that defines the holiday season for you? (Examples: Believe/Wonder/Bah Humbug?)
Savior-  without the birth of our Savior there would be no Christmas season

If Santa could assure its delivery, what’s the first thing on your holiday wish LIST?
   A Canon 5D Mark iii

What would be on your wish list?

We Want to Know Wednesday

This week is turning out to be a crazy full one and I am scrambling to find time to get anything done so thankful for Kenzie and Scriptor's We Want to Know Questions.   Don't forget tomorrow is Week 2 of the Review Extravaganza!   Thank you to all who have linked up, love reading the recaps.

 photo WWTKbutton-1-1_zps2077872a.jpg

1) Dinner and a movie: What do you eat and what kind of movie do you watch?
If we are talking about going out to a  movie, it is probably an action movie- something that would benefit and is better on the big screen.  Movies are so expensive and then paying for a babysitter on top of that- it has to be worth it to see on the big screen.  So a lot of the drama/romantic comedies can wait to be rented.
Dinner will vary from sushi to a really good burger place- we like it all.

2) Name your favorite actor and actress:
Actor- Hugh Jackman- I am always amazed when I go back and watch an older movie and realize, woah Hugh Jackman was in that.  The variety of roles he plays, the ability he has to really become that character so you almost don't even realize it is him.   Plus I have always loved loved X-Men and Wolverine is awesome!

Actress- Reese Witherspoon- Love Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Alabama and she just seems like the girl next door and someone who overall has her head on right

3) Will you watch any old Christmas movie or do you stick to the classics?
I will definitely watch whatever, there is just something I love about the cheesy made for TV movies.

4) What is your favorite holiday movie?
I would have to say The Christmas Card.  It is a Hallmark movie that Eric and I watched one year, and something about it just made me fall in love with it and it is the one I for sure watch every year.

  5) Tell us one holiday tradition you have?
Our biggest is probably our Christmas Eve traditions.   On Christmas Eve we reenact the true Christmas story with the fireplace crackling in the background and drink egg nog or hot chocolate while wearing the new Christmas Eve Pajamas the kids just opened.

How would you answer the questions?  What is your favorite Holiday movie (always looking for a new one)?

We Want to Know Wednesday

I am busy getting my first recap done for tomorrow for the Review Extravaganza 2013 so I figured this would be the perfect time to link up with Kenzie and Scriptor for We Want To Know Wednesday.
 photo WWTKbutton-1-1_zps2077872a.jpg

1. Would you rather eat at a fancy restaurant or eat a good home-cooked meal?
Restaurant no doubt!  Especially if it is just my husband and I; but even with kids, love eating out.

2. Would you rather go on a road trip to a big city or go to the country?
Big City-  I grew up outside of Chicago and have always loved how much there is to do.  Now that I live in the greater L.A. area; I am used to having lots of options available and want things to do while on vacation.

3. Would you rather receive $100 a day or $100,000 right now?
$100 a day for sure as in only 3 years it is over $100,000.  Unless the $100 a day stops at $100,000 then I will just take it all up front.

4. Would you rather it be summer all year or winter?
Do I even need to think about this?  Summer!  I live in Southern California, it is practically summer year round.

5. Would you rather watch TV or listen to music?
Watch TV, I really hardly ever listen to music anymore, even in the car I often don't have music on.  Not sure why, just don't listen to it that much.

How about you? Are you a music listener?  How would you take the money?

Come back tomorrow for the first week of the Review Extravaganza 2013!   So many awesome prizes you could win, plus it is just so fun to look back and recap and read other's recaps.  Remember, if you link all four weeks then you will be eligible for more bonus points (and better chances of winning).   You can read the rules and see the awesome prizes here.  See you tomorrow!

Old School Blogging: Questions for November

I have had a couple of more serious posts this week, so time to chill a little with some Old School Blogging with Elaine and her co-host this month That's Vandy.  #OSBlog!

Where is your cell phone?  In my jeans pocket- which is why all of my pockets of my pants are kind of wearing thin at the bottom of the pockets.

Your significant other?  My husband to whom I am very happily married for 12 1/2 years and am so excited about our date tonight to see Catching Fire!!
Old picture (good for Old School Blogging) from last year at BYU's bowl game
Your Hair?  Really needs to be dyed again!  Been getting gray hairs since I was 18!  But this was a great hair day a few days ago!
IMG_8033

Your Mother?  Is the most amazing example of serving others and patience!  Also, is going to be at my house on Monday!! Yeah!!

Your father?  Is scary to a lot of people who don't know him as he has the driest sense of humor; but really has become one of my best friends and someone who I love talking to almost every morning.

Your favorite thing?  getting lost in a good book, especially if everything around me is done so there is no guilt in doing so (so yeah rarely happens)

Your dream last night? I was back in high school and it was fall play time and the director was being crazy and can't remember much after that.

Your favorite drink? Sonic's cherry limeade

Your dream/goal? I have a couple that are both on my mind- 1st to be a published author, need to work on my book more!  Second- to have a really successful photography business where I specialize in newborns.

The room you are in? The family room

Your fear? To lose my husband or kids in some awful way

Where do you want to be in six years? Settled- in a house that we own because we aren't moving anymore, but who knows in this industry.

Where were you last night? Right here at home.  Missionaries from my church were over sharing a message with us and finding out what my family's plan is to be good examples and missionaries ourselves.

What are you not? A liar, a cheat, a partier, someone who walks on the wild side

Muffins? the food or the one around my mid-section?  I like the first kind, not the later.

One of your wish list items? Canon 5D Mark iii

Where you grew up? Illinois, tornado country, see my post from Tuesday

The last thing you did?  Get my kids into bed and now writing this post

What are you wearing? my very loved skinny jeans with the ripped up knees because they are so loved.. I need to go shopping.

Your TV? A Sony- big and skinny, though my husband wishes it was even bigger; it's currently turned off

Your pets?   None- but had a dog growing up

Your computer?  Mac Book Air-- which I hook up to a Thunderbolt display for photo editing

Your life? really pretty dang good and blessed, I am starting to feel a little unsettled though as we are hitting the 2 1/2 year mark in our current house and once we get past that it will be a record length.  I love where we live but I think I just feel that itch to move around this time automatically now.

Something you're not wearing? socks

Favorite store? Home Goods and Ross (I know that is two)

Your summer? seemed too long ago and went too fast

Like someone? Yes, all of you wonderful people who read my blog

Your favorite color? BYU Blue, though I look great in purple

When was the last time you laughed? today

Last time you cried? few days ago as I was reading this article about Mormon missionaries that were trapped in a house during the typhoon in the Philippines.

What is one thing on your to-do-list?  Family photo shoot - going to try some new locations, excited!

That was fun!  You should join in.  When was the last time you laughed?

Next week- will be the big announcement of all the great prizes you can win as part of the Review Extravaganza, plus the rules of how to play along.
