The Art of the Pony Tail

Growing up I had long long hair. I had long, long hair that I hated having brushed. I am not sure how my mom put up with me having long hair that I never wanted to get brushed, but she is extremely patient like that (something I am yet to inherit). When I was little she would do my hair in cute different ways, but as I got older I just always wore it down.

In fact, in junior high someone once asked me why I never wore my hair in a pony tail. I remember going home and trying a pony tail and thought I looked funny, (eek I could see my ears!) so down it would come. Eventually I got over this and now often look the best with a pony tail or my hair up.

But my years of aversion have led to something.. I really am not good at doing hair. Twice when I dropped Alex off at two different friends' houses, her hair was done when I picked her up. I will try and give Alex little pony tails, when she will sit still to get them, they look cute-ish at first with a few stray hairs and bumps throughout. Today for church she agreed to a pony tail. It looked cute, we even took some pictures, but yet there were still all the little hairs and bumps everywhere and halfway through sacrament meeting it had fallen out.

So, I guess I either need to somehow learn quickly or my poor Miss Alex will just be out of luck.

  1. I always put my hair in a pony tail. I'm too lazy to flat iron it everyday at 5am.

It's weird I can put my own hair up in a pony but I can't for the life of me put someone elses hair up. I can'te figure out how to put the hair tie in someone elses hair. I'm so weird.

  2. Hair hair hair, With 4 girls that is what I do. I need to do a post on hair, Maybe this week if I get time to blog.

It looks Like Alex has thin hair and layers, Make sure that you use a small band that will help and also try just putting half up, this will help with the layers. Good luck,

  3. Life is so ironic sometimes. I had three little sisters and I was a theatre/dance teacher. I have spent half my life doing hair either for school dances or dance concerts of plays of some sort.

    And yet...

I have all boys. No hair to be done around here.

btw - your little girl adorable even with bumbs and whispys falling out!

  5. Ok, did not know there were HAIR blogs....I will be stopping by there next. My little lady will only keep her hair looking nice for about an hour after I do it. On most days I only brush it out so she at least looks like someone loves her and then just let it go.

  6. Maybe that's why I don't have girls - because I wouldn't be able to do their hair! :)

  7. I have one word for you: Gel. A little gel in the hair before you slick it into a pony tail works wonders. (Personally though, I think the little stray hairs that come out make a little girl look like a little girl, you know what I mean?)

  8. It was a long time before Kristin's hair actually came together in a nice ponytail. Emily always takes them out. Alex is not doomed. She will either figure it out for herself or have friends do her hair for her. In the meantime, just practice. It gets loose because it is so fine. No worries.

  9. i had a boyfriend named charles my sophomore year in high school. the bugger is still my brother's best friend, thus holiday parties with his family every year. good thing I was the one to break it off;-) baaaaaaaa!!!!!!!! anyway, charles told me that pony tails were ugly on girls, that no matter disheveled a girl's hair looked that day, it always looked better down than up. i went 3 1/2 years without wearing my hair up. what a crock! hair up is darling! i wear my hair up almost daily now. i don't always start off the day with it up, but by the end i've always had it up at least once. i can't do the entire day, do to the fact that the head ache and pulling on the temples starts raging, but if i didn't have the raging temples i would wear it up all day. i love it:-) up is sooooooooo in;-) stupid charles. he's definitely never seen a darling little red head beauty like yours;-) wait, that would be wrong...this is sounding like i wanted it to...

  12. Little girl's hair is a STRUGGLE! It's so soft and wispy, it's hard to get it all together without dousing them with hairspray. I figure as long as it is clean and out of their face, it's good. I'm sure it will get better with time:)

  13. Okay, ya just need to invest in a little spray gel! I'm likin' the Aussie brand right now. Use a spray bottle to wet the hair, and then spray a bunch of spray gel, then use your comb to smooth it as you pull it up. Then plaster with hairspray! When it dries the hairs will stay in place!

  14. I way prefer the slightly messy do of your daughter than the way-too-perfect style of some other kiddos.

    It's really cute.

Now I really, really want a girl.

    Sigh.

  16. My advice, after many many many successful pig and pony tails, damp hair and an elastic with a little rubber showing or all rubber. The cloth ones slip right out of shiny slick hair like your daughters.

    Good Luck.
