Why a 7-year-old Should Not Buy a Car

I am a minivan driving mama. I never thought I would be. Driving a minivan that is- always planned on being a mama. When Eric and I first got married we vowed that someday when we had a few kids we would be SUV people- none of this soccer mom- minivan thing for us.

We had our share of beater cars, 87 Honda Civic- dubbed little gray- which we drove till I made the engine fall out (true story for another day)
(not actual car but a lot like this one)

a red Toyota Camry that made a loud thunk if you turned the wheel too far, a Toyota Tercel who's passenger seat was held up with a bucket, a Nissan Pickup, and finally we got a car we really loved a Mazda 3.
(ignore the look on my face- and I was very pregnant with Lucas)

The Mazda was a stick and other than the Honda Civic, which I made the engine drop out of, I had not driven a stick. Luckily, I had better luck with this and I loved this car. I would drop it back down to 4th and zip around those slow semi's- saying "zoom zoom" as I did.

But then we ran into a problem. A problem that we would encounter again and again.

My husband's height.

Eric is 15" taller than me. Now before you ask how short I am- you should be asking how tall he is. I come in at a pretty average 5'5"- Eric he is 6'8" (or 5'20" as he likes to tell people who ask how tall he is). When I was pregnant with our second we realized there was no way a car seat would fit behind Eric with the seat all of the way back as he needs it. So we traded in the Mazda 3 for a Mazda 5.

A couple of years later we realized that even this wouldn't work for us if we added a third kid. We went to an auto show, sat in a Dodge Caravan and we became mini-van people. We got the mini-van with the biggest engine possible but Eric is itching for more. He wants a Hemi- he is missing the Hemi his recently sold truck had- now that he has a company vehicle.

So yesterday while Alex was at a birthday party, the rest of us went and looked at a Dodge Durango with the Hemi of course- mostly to humor Eric. As we sat in it and put Ryder's car seat in it- I quickly shot down Eric's Hemi dream as I talked about school pick-ups and accessibility and all that practical stuff us mom think about.

Lucas- well he was another story. "I love this car! Look at this! Isn't this fancy. Look, I could sit back here and fit really good. I really think we should get it."

When the car salesman stepped away I told Lucas- you can't seem like you want it so much otherwise we won't get the best price. "oh" he said- as it seemed to sink in.

The salesman returned. "Oh look mom! Look at this button that moves the seat- isn't that awesome! Wow, I really like this. We definitely need to get this car!"

And that my friends is why if we do buy a new car Lucas will be staying at home.

P.S. Since there is still a week left of the month- Ten Things to Smile About This month will be next Tuesday May 1st! This is your chance to look back and the month and find ten things that made you smile! More info here.

  1. Ha! Too cute. I know, though, isn't that true how you can't show how much you like a car. I hate having to haggle over cars.

BTW, we will never have that problem. My hubby is 5'4 and I'm 5'0 :-) But I do love my minivan!

  2. Ha ha that's too cute. Lucas really wants that van :) We bought our last car online and had all our money taken car of to go get it from the dealership, and we were still getting haggled...plus it took almost 3 hours even though we were just coming to sign and pick up the car!

  3. Last summer we went through the same thing. Chloe (my 7 year old daughter) loved every car and wanted to buy every car! I too never EVER EVER wanted a minivan. I was all about the SUV and would never buy a "mommy van". Until one day I took a ride in a minivan with a woman at work... and it was so nice and spacious. I thought how nice it would be to fit two kids, me and my husband and the dog! I am now a proud owner of a mommy van! Funny how you end up doing things you swear you'd never do!

    1. oooo I had TWO blogs open at the same time and commented on them both - I guess blogger mixed up my comment! Yikes! OOPS! I meant to say: buying a new car is fun - except the pesky salesmen! I bought a new car a few years back and had a list of "requirements" (Like what I could afford, etc) and he PUSHED me into this cute little car (that I have) and guaranteed my payments, etc...and NOTHING went how he said it was going to go.

  5. Haha too cute! He really wants that vehicle. There are times I really miss my mini van. But the transmission was getting ready to fall out so we went out and got my Chrysler Sebring.

  6. Yes, you definitely have to make like you're not THAT interested. Oh Lucas.....

  8. You know, if you bribed Lucas, you might be able to get him to complain about it in front of the salesperson. That might be more effective in getting you the price you want. ;o)

  9. Yes, and that is also why Eric is the best person to take when you need to buy a car, he knows how to get the deal. It sounds like Lucas should stay home though . . . haha!

  10. When we bought our last car....just last June, it was because we got a popcorn air freshener in the mail and my darling daughter insisted we had to go to the car lot to see if you really can't smell the popcorn in the mini van.

I refused to buy the mini van but ended up with a new Murano instead.

  11. Good to know...I will tell Rich not to take the boy with him when he goes car shopping. In fact, I think I will go with him to keep him on a tight leash! hahaha.

  12. I'm pretty sure I did the same thing to my parents at some point! hahah....I have to admit I love my mini van even though I swore I would NEVER drive one.

  13. I adore my minivan, despite my swearing them off prior to kids also. If we didn't have three kids I might not need it, but there is no way I would be remotely sane without ours now. When I purchased our minivan (without my husband for a number of reasons,) I had all three kids with me and I swear I got a better deal just because they wanted us out of there. :)

  14. LOL! Kids, they are just SO helpful. :)

  15. I don't think JDaniel will go car shopping with us either.

  16. Ha ha! That's how I used to be when we went car shopping until my husband clued me in. BTW, I've heard good things about Dodge Durangos! :)

  17. Kids get so excited about all that stuff! I now understand why my parents would cringe and hesitate to take us to places like that.

  18. Don't take an 8 year old either... we did that last year when I bought my car, I had to keep telling my {step}daughter to shush! :)

  19. Once the kids are older and you're out of minivan mode, have Eric try a German car! My husband is 6'6" and he fits comfortable in just about every car the Germans make - VW, BMW, Mercedes... They're pricey but the space is incredible. We have a VW GTI (the size of a Golf/Rabbit) and he fits comfortably with space to spare in the driver's seat and I can actually sit behind him without losing my legs (and I'm 5'9"). I wanted a Mazda3 too, but had to nix it because of the height problem, I can't imagine getting kids in it to boot!

  20. Ha! We will have a similar car problem in the future. My husband is tall (not as tall as yours) but he pushes the seat all the way back in my car. After noticing how the car seat in my friend's car had to remain in one place I realized there was no way we would be able to take long trips in my car with a car seat so we will have to find something that will allow my husband to sit comfortably with a car seat.

  21. CUTE and just an FYI my hubz bought me a Durango a few years ago and i love it more than the Mercedes i use to drive, true story.

  22. When we bought our Outback last year, the boys did the same. We had talked on the test drive, and they blabbed the minute we got back!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Lol! We have a Durango, and love it, but we've been considering the mini-van too :)

  24. Haha! My dad loves to tell the story about the time he took my brother and me with him to buy a new car. Needless to say, he didn't get the best deal! :-)

Oh, and I don't actually have a car, but I think minivans sound cool.

    1. I don't know, Lucas just might be on to something here...Just say, "Hey salesman, my little boy wants this car so what kind of deal are you going to give us?" You see we have to have it now but we only have so much to spend...What can do about it!" You don't want my boy to start crying do you?

Heck he'll practically give it to you just so he doesn't have to see him cry!

We all eventually become mini van mom's it's when all my boys were driving and had their own cars did I realize I didn't need my van anymore.

  25. Holy Mackeral! That IS tall! No Durango... not if you tow anything... Chryslers make crappy two vehicles. I refuse to drive a mini van and tell people it's a towing capacity thing. I drive an Acadia, which has a 6,000 towing capacity... but I haven't actually put a hitch on it yet... *SIGH*

  26. 5'20"? that is tall I'm only 5'1 and my husband is 6'2 so I completely understand the feeling since my dream car is a mini cooper haha, he laughs that we would be like Olivia from TV driving such a small car. Kids are so cute specially when buying big ticket items! Congratulations on the new mini van.

  27. LOL! Love the 5'20" bit! I'm a bit more "fun sized" then you, and I still get dirty looks if I don't move the seat back after driving MY car!, ha :)

Too funny about the kiddo making the sales pitch!

  28. I could see that being a definite disadvantage during the car buying process! Maybe Dad was paying him?
