Proud Mommy Moments: Basketball Fits

It's Thursday!!  It is Proud Mommy Moments (#PMM) time!  This is your weekly chance to brag about the awesome things your kids, nieces, nephews, etc did and no one will judge because we told you to you to. Or you can do the opposite and tell us about those moments your kids made you so "proud"- i.e. something totally embarrassing but hey it makes for great blog material!  Please grab the button for your post and visit my co-host Kmama.

Eric is in a city basketball league on Monday nights.  He loves when we are all able to come and watch him play and I love going to watch him play... sort of.  Don't get me wrong, I totally love watching him and yell and cheer with the best of them and if I could go by myself it would be perfect.  The kids are excited go watch daddy play basketball too- but their watching usually lasts about two minutes and then they run around playing with the extra basketballs or jump off the bleachers (my favorite).

A couple of weeks ago as we drove to Eric's game Lucas and Alex were in a heated discussion about who would get to use Daddy's ball first. Really? I thought, they are arguing before we even get there!  As soon as we got into the gym Alex headed right to the entrance of Eric's court where he was warming up, standing guard waiting to immediately grab his ball.

Thankfully Lucas got distracted by something else and wasn't right there waiting with her as I know the shoving and pushing that would have ensued.  The buzzer rang, signaling time for the game to begin.

"Daddy, can I have your ball?" Alex sweetly asked batting her eyelashes.  Eric handed her the ball and she ran off victorious.   Lucas spotted her and suddenly remembered his earlier desire for the ball.

"But I wanted to play with the ball!" I heard Lucas whine to his sister.   I headed over and intervened setting a time for how long Alex would have the ball and then it would be Lucas turn.   Thankfully it worked.   Soon some other kids joined them and they ended up all playing a bounce/pass game.

I happily sat and watched Eric's team school the other team- holding on to Ryder's hand as he risked his life going up and down the bleacher in front of me.   Some time passed and then I heard it first.  Alex and Lucas both screaming and then I saw Alex running with the ball, dropping to the floor and clutching that ball like her life depended on it.

"Alex give us the ball back!"  Lucas was saying.   I headed over to once again see what was going on. According to Alex, the other kids weren't playing right (i.e. not playing how she wanted to) and so she took the ball.  I took the ball and gave it back to Lucas and the other kids causing Alex to wail.  I leaned down and talked with her about needing to take turns and not always being able to have her way.

She didn't want to hear this though and proceeded to lay on the floor and kick and scream about it not being fair!  Thankfully it was fairly loud in the basketball courts so everyone didn't hear- but yea enough heard.  I simply stood by her and talked with her calmly and then ignored her and talked with my friend who was standing close by.

She finally gave up and stopped crying and instead just lay there and pouted.  My friend later commented on how impressed she was with how I handled that and stayed so calm.

"Ah, this isn't the first time I have seen this." I responded,"in fact, I'm pretty used to it."

Let me tell you, watching your five-year-old kick and scream makes you oh so proud.

What is your Proud Mommy Moment this week?

  2. Those are the moments when you wish the ground would open up and swallow your child for a little bit. ;-)

It's hard to remain calm in those situations. Good job!

  3. Good job on remaining calm and not giving her the attention she was probably looking for when she had the tantrum!

  4. Good job, Mama! Tantrums are second nature around here too. ;)

  5. I love tantrums...so fun! You handled it so well, for real. That's what we have to do with Lincoln...just ignore him til he is done.

  6. I always handle things like that better in public. It would be awesome if I could stay calm at home too!

  7. Isn't it so true that they want it most when a sibling has it?!??!! Staying calm isn't always super easy but it's definitely better than both of you laying in the floor crying :) Congrats on winning that round - ha!

  8. There's nothing like a mom that talks it over and ignores the aftermath. They realize that they're screaming for nothing. I love going to my kids games alone. It's gotten better because my youngest is 5 but its not easy. Good job, mama!

  9. As the mom of a boy who screams when he has to work on the back float at swimming lesson, I know what you were feeling.

  10. Such fun, huh? Did you have to suppress a laugh through it? That's what's always the kicker for me, if my own, or another child gets a wee bit sad, sometimes I find it so very funny to listen to why they are enraged. Of course eventually I work through it with them if I need to, but oh the woes of the children!

PS: I am DELIGHTED you likes the trot and bear picture. I thought the dogs eyes were quite perfect, but I needed some insight from someone else. Yay! One good picture culled off the camera card, I'll keep trying for more ;)

  11. My husband plays baseball during the summer. But it's a pain in the butt with the kids!

  12. You might not be proud of her behavior, but you should definitely be proud of yours. Staying calm is one of the hardest things to do when kids start melting down.

  15. I think you handled the situation really well. Like, really well. I have no idea how you managed to ignore her like that. This is a Proud Of Emmy Moment! ;o)

  16. Ahh, we all experience those! Lovely when they choose a public audience! Sounds like your reaction worked!

  17. I know how that is all too well. Good for you for staying calm, though. My patience and calmness comes and goes depending on the amount of sleep I got the night before. But really, I too am impressed.
