It's like riding a bike....

How many times have you heard that expression. Riding a bike once you know how you should be able to just jump right on and do it again. But what was it like when you first started learning?

Every time we go out in the garage the first thing Alex would do was run and jump on Lucas' old bike. She desperately wanted to ride it. So last Saturday we made a trip to Walmart and bought her a helmet. We then loaded the kids bikes in the truck and headed to the park. Alex was extremely excited to finally be riding a bike. We buckled on her helmet, she hopped right on the bike and she was off. Well, for about two feet until she pushed backwards on the peddles and stopped the bike. She starred at her feet and pushed harder and harder, backwards though so no luck. Eric instructed her to push foward with her top foot and she was off again! For about two feet until she pushed backwards again.
This went on for quite a while. Every once in a while she would get into a good rhythm and make it a ways.... but then the second problem started to become apparent. She was concentrating and staring at her feet so much that she never looked up. Luckily daddy stayed right with her and helped steer so she didn't run off the sidewalk. "Look up Alex" he would prompt.. which she would do for a minute and then it was those darn feet again.

Lucas made it around the loop about 5 times by the time Alex made it once.

So we'll it's like riding a bike... confusing, takes all your concentration and you get stuck a lot? Hmm... so well if they are talking about life than maybe that expression is just right.

  1. Your posts are always so cute and clever. I just laugh thinking about Alex trying to ride her bike around the loop. Wish we could have done it with you!

  2. Thanks! :) I enjoy writing them. Just wait, later today I am going to write about the secret to happiness.

And yes it took a very very long time for Alex to get around.
