Bunk Beds

Growing up I shared a room; I had 3 brothers and 2 sisters, so even with the addition my dad built to the house, sharing was still necessary. I first shared with my older brother Chris. We had bunk beds not to different from these ones... except ours didn't have the nice drawers underneath, a rail only on one side, and was more of that dark 70's brown color that was once popular.

I slept on the bottom bunk and my brother was up top. Our bed was about a foot away from the wall since it was by the window. In the pre-air conditioning days so we would put a fan up in the window to help bring in the cool night air, so we needed that extra space.

I remember one night sleeping in bed when I was woken up by a loud thud! I looked down in the space between the bed and the wall and there was my brother. "Chris?! Chris!?!" I said... he didn't move and then I heard a snore. He was asleep. So as any good sister would do, I said "oh well", rolled over and went back to sleep. I am pretty sure he slept there all night.

So with number three on the way, we have been debating, do we have dare have the kids share rooms? Well, my kids just seem to never sleep through the night... well eventually they do but it takes a ridiculous amount of time for them to, so we decided one of them sharing with the baby would not be a good idea. And after a few incidents of crazy hyper kids at hotels we have ruled out Lucas and Alex sharing a room (and Lucas really needs his own space)... so instead, this weekend when my in-laws are here, Eric and my father-in-law will be building a wall to divide our ginormous play room into two rooms. So no crazy bunk-bed experiences will be taking place in our house. Though if I had my way, I might just get some kids beds like these

How fun would that be?! Oh but, wait, then they could still flip out over the top while leaning too far over the top rail to look at their little Christmas tree like I did when I was about 11.... hmmm maybe I will just keep them closer to the ground.

  1. Emmy, we are contemplating it too - but since we have the bedrooms already it just doesn't make sense... I like my sleep too much

And I get more of it when everyone is sleeping in their own rooms.

    Good luck with the construction!

  3. I shared a room with my older sister and Megan. We had bunk beds and a twin bed in the same room. My older sister also fell off the top bunk and slept righ trough it. Megan and I ended up moving down into our unfinshed basement for awhile as three girls in one room was no longer working:)

  4. Oh you brought back such fond memories of my childhood! I used to have bunkbeds with my little sister. One morning, after I had been waiting for the tooth fairy the night before, I was mad because she hadn't come to visit me. Actually, what happened is, I fell out of bed (top bunk) with my pillow and blanket securely in position. Didn't wake me up, but my tooth fairy money had stayed up in the bed, where I should have been. Good times, good times...

  5. We slept on bunkbeds too. My brother would always fall off! Great idea to split the playroom...although that bunk bed looks like fun!

  7. check out that amazing bunk experience! My goodness. I have had a few bunk bed experiences in my life, but nothing permanent. Not quite sure where I stand with if ever Bear will have a bunkmate, but i can say that this house was bunks galore when we moved in! It had been a second home and it could sleep 15!! There were even bunk beds in the unfinished basement. Guess no one really cared where they slept if they were coming to Vermont to ski.

  9. How would any kid actually sleep with a bunk bed like that? Crazy fun!

I am pretty sure we'll never have bunk beds, though I did in college!

  10. Our two shared until we remodeled and they were crushed when we split them up. It's been two years now and they are QUITE used to having their own space. I still think bunks are cool and want them for Max for sleepovers. Space saver and fun!

  11. With four kids in four and a half years, we've come close to getting bunkbeds so many time but still haven't because all the beds we like are so expensive!
So they still sleep on mattresses on the ground.
I really like the ones that have actual stairs that go up to the top bunk.
    How cool would that be!
    Good luck deciding!

  12. No bunkbeds in my kids future since they are almost 6 years apart. My oldest thought she wanted to share a room with her sister so they could have the other room as a play room...that lasted a few weeks before she decided it wasnt working out

  13. I always always wanted bunk beds when I was a kid. I remember being entranced by them and wanting to be the kid on the top. And that kid bunk bed is cool!! I used to build forts in my room all the time. That would have been so cool!

  15. That bunk bed is cool. My two boys shared a bunk bed until they were older and got separate rooms and beds.

  16. We are planning on a third for next year, and my boys will be using bunk beds. I think my oldest will be responsible enough not to fall off the top bunk.

We actually bought them bunk beds and they are just each using one half on the ground right now! That's planning ahead, don't you think?

  17. My daughters share a room. It was difficult at first. Libby really would like her own space and often refers to it as "her room." But the upside is that my kids can sleep anywhere under any circumstances! They have twin beds though. Bunk beds scare me!

  18. I have always wanted to get my kids one of those beds with the slide!! Living vicariously!!

  19. I came from a family with 3 brothers and 2 sisters too. We loved our bunk beds which were a necessity in our small home. That last image is cute, but would the kids ever want to go to sleep? LOL!

  20. Our kids all share rooms. We have seven kids in three bedrooms. I looked at a five bedroom house, but ruled it out because I didn't want to deal with the fighting over who would get their own room.

  21. Some friends of ours found that exact same bunk bed set on clearance and my kids LOVED playing at their house because they had a slide INSIDE!

We don't have space to not, so our kids all share rooms. It is a blessing and a curse.

  24. The frame of the bed is made from sturdy wood and gives the appearance of a big box. This box is very useful and can be used for storing bed sheets, quilts, pillows, etc.princess carriage toddler bed
