Time Out: Yes Please

"Go to your room!". Some days I say this a lot.
"No! I'm sorry!" they will plead.
"I am glad you are sorry but there are consequences to your actions."

Lucas will grudgingly go (sometimes after many warnings and other punishments); Alex will go with her shoulders hunched over, head hanging low. It is quite humorous how miserable she can look.

This is their punishment. Mean-mean me sends them to their rooms where about 1/2 of their toys are. Yet it is still a horrible punishment. Rarely do I find them playing with their toys when I go to talk with them. They are usually sitting on their bed pouting. I am just holding my breath for the day when they realize they can just be having fun during their time outs.

My mom must have realized this by the time my sister and I came around as she would make us sit on a chair. No being sent to our room to play with our toys. Plus we shared a room and often were in trouble for fighting with each other, so being sent to the same room could have been dangerous.

I wish I could be sent to time out in my room with my "toys". Let's see, a minute per age, I am pushing 30. Yeah 30 minutes in my room with my toys, i.e.my iPad and iPhone....well I think I would be getting into a lot of trouble. Mommy didn't clear her dishes when asked- time out for mommy. Mommy yelled at the kids to be quiet when she was on the phone- time out for mommy.

"Mommy you pinched me!"
"You are right, that is a bad bad Mommy, I am going to time out."

Ahhh, I can imagine it now.

Now if you would excuse me, I have a child to pinch.

Disclaimer: Before any of you go calling CPS on me- the last part was all in jest. I would never pinch my kids- but I do often forget to clear my dishes.

  1. I'll take a time out too. To bad there is no where to take it right now.

  2. Oh yes. When Charlie is home I often just tell him "Mommy needs a time out!" Then I go to the room and shut the door. I wish it was 30 minuets worth, but I usually feel guilty and only stay in there about 5. Sometimes 5 is all you need! Can't say I haven't lied and said I needed to use the bathroom just so I could go some where and shut the door. I usually just sit on the floor and look at a magazine... IN PEACE. I know, bad Mommy. But hey, if Mommy goes bonkers she is no help to anyone in the house! LOL

On a side note, Lula Mae gets time outs in her crib. Well, they don't work anymore because she likes being in her crib. Even though it is empty! She will ask to go to time out randomly.... we are currently looking for a new discipline method. Ugh.

  3. That's too funny Em. I love it! I think sometimes moms really do need time outs. Though 30 minutes might cause more trouble than it's worth. If only . . . :)

  5. Mommy time outs are a must! Mine would be longer than yours! :P

I have sent Emily to her room, where many of her toys live. She did the same thing. Sat on her bed and pouted. Normally it is the chair. But sometimes you just don't want to be around them. And sometimes you need to pinch them. ;)

  6. Haha...Love it! My husband and I always joke that if only we had a mirowave in our bedroom, we could hide for days (since we already have asmall fridge for drinks in the sitting room lol).

  7. Hahaha...that sounds like a great plan! Although, I may have to stock my room with a bottle of wine and possibly some chocolate covered rasins first.

    Stopped by from Mama Kat's...

  11. Oh man I would love a time out!

I go for the traditional corner for time outs with my girls. They each have their own corner too lol. Every once in a while if Im super frustrated then I will tell the oldest to go in her room and sit on her bed until I tell her that her time is up. That is when I really need to destress and take a breather before talking about whatever behavior caused the punishment in the first place

  12. *sigh* what a beautiful thought. Time out for the mother! I only wish it would work that way. I think I would read. I miss reading. And my two year old has figured out how to beat the system with time out. He goes to his room, screams, and then quite suddenly stops and seconds later is out, smiling, saying "I'm happy!"
I guess this means I need to find a new place for time out as we also have a rule that when you are grumpy you go grump by yourself in your room. No one likes to be around a grumpy gus. When you are happy, you can come out. I think he has mixed the two up. Oops! :)
