Pour Your Heart Out: The Dentist

I am linking up today with Shell's meme Pour Your Heart Out. If you have not seen her blog, definitely check it out-she is one of my must reads.

A lump is rising in my throat. My stomach feels like it's doing a dance. But I have to mask all this. I have to be essence of calm and peace.

Why?

Because I am at the dentist. It's not my appointment but an appointment for Lucas.

The last time we went to the dentist it was an awful experience. They had me leave so they could "get tough with him". And I got to sit in the lobby listening to him scream bloody murder and hearing all of the other parents remarks of who's child is that?

Needless to say we are at a different dentist now. It was past time for another cleaning and he has two adult teeth poking through and the baby teeth are just barely loose.

I told him if he gets nervous to just think about the new Legos we are going to go buy him after his appointment if he does good. Bribery/awards whatever you want to call it-it will hopefully help take the edge off.

He is back being seen. I don't hear any screaming so far.. They haven't come and got me saying he isn't cooperating.

The lump slides back down a little...the dance in my stomach slows.

I continue to project the essence of calm while I wait...

Wait to see...

I wrote this while sitting at the dentist office last week. I am happy to say it was a much better experience. Tomorrow we are heading back to the dentist. Those barely loose baby teeth- are going to be pulled. So I'm putting my game face on again, wish me luck.

*****And don't forget about Fix It For Me Wednesday where I edited and fix a picture and tell you what I did to fix it-it can be seen on my other blog here. Also, don't forget, if you email me a picture I will fix your picture for you as part of my Fix it For me Wednesdays! Check it out!

  1. Wow! Good luck tomorrow. I'll be thinking about you guys. I still haven't taken my kids and I know I should. I had to get 8 baby teeth pulled when I was a kid - a lot older than Lucas, but still no fun!

  2. Poor Lucas! I hate the dentist, so I don't blame him for being upset. I hope tomorrow goes smoothly!

I'm off to check out your other blog. What a cool idea!

  3. Poor kid... has to be better than my dentist when I was a kid... he no kidding used to put me in a straight jacket. How did that affect me as an adult? Can you say severe dental anxiety?

  4. Ahhh! I haven't brought my daughter to see the dentist yet but it is time. I'm sure I'll feel the same way as you!

  6. We go to a pediatric dentsit for our boys--so much less stress. I hate the dentist, but Turbo does OK with it. Poor kid has had four baby molars pulled in the last year. Hope yours does OK.

  8. Yikes! My kids go to a pediatric dentist, and I've been able to go back and be with them through every one of their appointments. I have a tough time watching them get numbing shots though, so I have to look away for that.
    I'm glad Lucas did well!

  9. Oh, poor Lucas.

A bad dentist experience can be there forever!

  10. We've had some "fun" times at the dentist too.
In fact, we changed and the new dentist won't do anything "advanced" until my poor little guy is comfy because of the previous trauma.
And I would NEVER sit in the waiting room and wonder whose child was yelling...out loud in front of his parent. jerks.

  11. You made the right decision to change dentists, and I'm really glad this last visit went well. Here's hoping for the next one to follow suit.

  12. I always say that I would rather give birth again than go to the dentist. I think my childhood dentist must have been the one that Lucas went to last time. I.am.so.sorry!!!! So glad it's getting better.

I need to go see Shell with her Wednesday Meme. I like it!

  13. I hate the dentist too. I've even considered being put to sleep when I go...such a chicken! But I have a good reason, my last dentist (not my new one, I like him) filled cavities in my front teeth with very little pain medicine. I kept wincing and literally crying and he kept right on working. Kept me from a dentist for 10 years.

    Good luck!

  15. Sounds like that first dentist was a dillhole! I think the mommy brave face is one of the hardest parts of mommyhood.

  19. Ugh! You actually paid them to torture your kid? I think I would have been irate and written a few nasty letters... though I would have ended up paying as well. I am glad that it went better this time!
