Why I Could Never Be a Celebrity

I am a blogger- so obviously I put myself out there.  Out there for the world to read, to see and to criticize.   Thankfully so far I have been able to avoid too many crazies in the blogging world.  I have heard many incidents of rude and awful things happening but have remained under the radar from such things myself.

I always wonder how I would react, would I respond, would I just delete it?  It makes me wonder how celebrities do it.  I cannot imagine what it would be like to always have someone speculating on everything you do and wear.  I just really do not think I could do it.

Over a year ago, I posted a video on YouTube- it was a video of Ryder about 9-months-old showing how he reacted almost everyday when Eric got home--here is the video:
I took the video simply to document and show this stage in life and how funny and cute I thought it was that he reacted this way.  After it had been up for a while, the video  suddenly went viral.  Not viral with millions of hits, but right now it has over 172,000 views.

It must admit this was kind of exciting at first, to watch the numbers rise, for the comments of "I love it" and "he's so cute" come in.  It felt good to receive this recognition-- and hey most of you reading this are bloggers so you understand.

But of course when things start getting popular, the haters come out.  Comments ranging from, 'he's ugly' to 'why do people like this' and an extreme (which I did delete) about the camera being shut off and some b*slapping going on.

And while the positive comments are the majority and it is just a very slim minority of negative comments; it just still stings a little.  It leaves me wondering-- what do these people get out of leaving a comment like that?  If I watch something I don't like I just click away-- unless it was something truly offensive or incorrect then I might take a stand.   I would never leave a comment on a video like this saying "your baby is ugly" or even that I didn't like it, I would just click away.   The "safety" and the anonymity that a computer screen brings us seems to dampen people's filters and remembrance that there is a real person behind all of that.

So while I know the haters are wrong and I really am not putting much stock to what they say it just has made me realize I could never be a celebrity.

  1. Ugh. I have no idea why people feel the need to share their hate. All I can think of is that there life is so miserable, they want to spread it around.

  2. I suspect that the people that leave nasty comments are just not that nice, even in person. Maybe their mothers never taught them better.

  3. It's really sad! I have a friend who has a blog and she has lots of "haters" and "trolls"... these people seriously look for ways to harass her and her family.

And by the way, he's a beautiful boy :)

  4. I really hate seeing negative comments. Especially when it is about a child. I was reading comments on that little girl,Adalia Rose on Facebook and some nasty people kept saying kill her and how ugly she is. I don't understand how people can be so mean and hateful.

Love the video of Ryder :)

  5. i love ryder!!! that video is so cute. that is awful what people said. i haven't been on facebook in over a month except to post my blog link for my family there b/c i was so exhausted of reading negative things or listening to people's unfiltered opinions and that is on a small scope of people i actually know.

  6. Unfortunately I think sometimes that's why celebs break up/etc is because of all the bad publicity. That or they are trying to get free publicity! But they truly have to have thick skin which is something I don't have! And yeah I've received a few hateful comments and I don't know why. I got one one time while writing out my husband and my love story that basically said I was whiny and didn't take other people into consideration. I'm like wait, this is my love story!

  7. He's darling!
Unfortunately, there are some very small people out there.

  8. It's okay, I will find them and b*tch slap myself. The thing is, they are probably kids. Kids with nothing better to do. And that is sad. But like you, "poof be gone!" and delete! Oh and block. If you didn't already. Slimes.

  9. Oh wow! As I was reading this I was getting excited for your172,000 views but then I can't even believe people would be so nasty. It is only natural to feel the way you do as any mother would...quite seriously as a mother if anyone said that about my child I'd be livid...but in all honesty your baby is not ugly by any means and the people that said that are obviously jealous they don't have an adorable baby to video tape and are sad and pathetic watching youtube video's all day with no lives...so seriously shrug it off girl and keep making them videos because it's seriously adorable!

  10. I agree with you 110%!! There is no reason to leave nasty comments or to be rude! If you don't like something ignore it, walk away... carry on like it didn't exist.

Besides... they're idiots... he's really damn cute!

  11. People can be so awful! I couldn't be a celebrity either... Every time I'm criticized in any way by anyone, it triggers my social anxiety. I really can't handle criticism at all without practically having a panic attack and I go to great lengths to avoid it.

  12. I don't know why people do that, but they sure do. Always when there are large numbers of viewers, odds are that it could happen. You can always disallow comments on that video so you won't have to see them.

I suspect people that leave comments like that do it all the time everywhere. :(

  13. I guess with technology people become desensitized and feel like they can say anything b/c there is no one to hold them accountable. I don't get rude people...they must have a miserable life!

  14. I'm with you, I feel bad for the Celebs. It must be hard living your life in a fishbowl where your every move is judged and criticized. Lourie is probably right, most likely its just kids making the rude comments about Ryders video.

At least you can delete the comments and just for the record, I thought the video was precious. I love how he knew, even at that age, his daddy's voice and couldn't wait to see him. That's all that matters!

  15. I love his smile at the end! So cute.

And yes, people hide behind the computer screen. They are bitter and angry at their own lives and cannot find any happiness for other people. It's sad that this is the only way they can even crack a smile. It's pathetic. And I'm sorry you had that experience.

  16. I think this is the reason why I don't mind having a blog that very few people read. Protection, I guess, from mean people.? I've always wondered why people put so much effort into being negative. Seems like a waste of energy, and it is sad.

We all of course, know how CUTE Ryder IS!! And I could never be a celeb either. Don't want to be! I don't even ever want to be on a news clip! :)

  17. Oh my goodness...that video is SO cute!!! Ignore the haters, and I could never be a celebrity either ;)

  18. I'm stunned that anyone would leave a mean comment on something so precious. People are crazy!

  19. you and me both being a celebrity would have me in all kinds of trouble as i can't filter my mouth i'd be telling the paparazzi off all the time

  20. I've always wondered why people like that spend time leaving nasty comments. I wish I had that extra time so I could spend it doing something productive.

  21. Those people who put that are UGLY. Inside and out.
    Jerks.
He's adorable and it's an adorable video.

  22. Aagh! I love that video! What a cutie. People are jerks. I can't fathom how anyone could say that about another mother's baby. There are a lot of people our there in a lot of pain who believe that misery lives company, i guess. But at least everyone who truly knows, understands what a sweet warming video that is!

  23. Who in their right mind would call him ugly?!?! I have no idea what motivates people to leave comments like that. It's obnoxious. You just gotta ignore it. It's like the girls in middle school who say things just to get something started. They're idiots. Revel in your "fame", girl! There will always be more lovers than haters!

  24. A video with over 100,000 hits? I would be so excited, but that is ashame how mean people can be. I'm the same way....If I don't like it I click off.I think the people that do that never really comment as themself. The hide behind a fake profile.

  25. I don't know why people have to be so rude. I almost feel sorry for them, the only thing they can do is leave nasty people comments on the internet; their life must be sad.

  26. I don't get people! The blogging world is so kind, but the internet is not. We had the same thing happen when my son put a video up. I could live my whole life without that part of fame. And don't even ask me what happened when I got my name in the paper. It was for something entirely different, but because they mentioned that I had 12 children I was called a "baby factory" and several people suggested my sweetie might be better off without a few useful body parts...

  27. That's why I stop blogging occasionally..I get chicken. It hurts me when people say cruel things. I know it's just them and their need to make others miserable to make themselves feel better but Ican't take it. Facebook does the same to me. Ruins my day (yet, of course, I can't stay away). I just had an incident last night. Some guy being a total jerk on facebook telling me I was belittling him (which I didn't mean that way at all and in my opinion sounded innocent) and yet he is always sarcastic on my posts and much crueler--he's been that way since high school! He gets away with it because he is handsome and a musician who preaches following Christ and being Christlike (a bit hypocritical it always seems to me). (ok sorry, you just got me on a venting spree, sorry!) And it ruined my evening, night, and even part today. I just don't handle it well.

You've done well I think handling cruel (and totally unfounded) comments. I personally think that is such a cute video and a cute baby! Just don't take it to heart, sweet Emmy--I know you know that, and I know it's easier said that done, but I had to say it to try to help cheer you up in my own small way. People are just ugly...on purpose too...that's the amazing part.

  28. First of all, weird that the video got a lot of attention all of a sudden.
Second, ANYONE who doesn't think Ryder is the cutest baby in the world is either blind or sick in the head. SOme people are just awful creeps. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Completely agreed! I think that a lot of the comments are spam as well. Kind of like blog comments that are weird and inappropriate. How rude some people can be!

  30. I don't get the negativity either. I just figure those people feel pretty crummy about themselves and putting others down is a way to elevate themselves. It's a form of bullying, I guess. I think baby videos are beautiful - all of them. Babies are the best of us! I haven't received much crappola either, but it eventually comes, if you blog long enough. It's best to ignore it, but I'm sure that's hard when it's hurtful.

  31. Just one more reason it is good for my blog to stay small. How people could say anything negative about your little cutie is beyond me.
