Parenting Made Simple

Parenting is hard, but sometimes it can be really simple.

I don't have a lot of memories of the little things growing up- the day to day things.  I can't remember what my routine was when I got home from school, I don't remember what I would eat for breakfast or if I would have an after school snack, but one thing I do remember is the books.

I have always loved books, I had a big shelf full of them in my room.  It was this giant metal shelf that actually was quite good for climbing on too.  I would sometimes play library, making little slips of paper that I would stamp with the date of when it was due; something my kids now know nothing about with everything being computerized.

I just loved to read.

Fill your kids lives with books!
I remember my mom sitting down at night and reading to all of us kids.  I don't remember the books or details of the stories,  but I remember us all being there together as my mother read.  I loved it.
Book finding tip
Every day we can make the decision of what we want to learn that day, what we want to teach and share.  As parents and mothers, it is so important that we include our children in this learning and growing, that we help facilitate it.

It is so easy to think that requires hours of time spent browsing Pinterest for amazing enriching activities to keep our kids entertained, but it can be simple.

Simple things to do as a parent

As simple as sitting down at night and reading our kids a book.  As simple as making up a rhyming game while you all do the dishes together.  As simple as just talking and really being there with our kids.

When my oldest was just a baby, as he would babble to me, I would answer back with, "Really!  That is so interesting, please tell me more."   It probably looked quite silly, but I could see the connection, the understanding; he knew what he was 'saying' and while I did not, he knew I was there listening, speaking back.

Those first years of childhood are so important; it is easy to feel overwhelmed and tired and like you just want to scream at times!  But no matter how crazy it was, I didn't want to look back with regrets, regrets of things I should have taught, could have done.  It is the simple things.

First 5 California is dedicated to helping parents during those first five years.

With games and ideas for kids, to health services, learning services, the site really has so much to offer.   I love the games and activities, like that Alphabet House; so many great and easily doable ideas that can make a difference.

Plus did you see their videos?  There is even a message from the President about parenting.

It is those little things, the little moments, the time together- that is what your kids will remember, that is what matters most.

  1. I agree with you, reading is such an important time. I'm a little sad my kids are too old, and prefer to read on their own now. BUT, at least they are still reading! :)

  2. I want to put a plug in for church libraries! Our church has an amazing librarian who has a children's section full of board books, pictures books, and puzzles. And when kids come in and check out a book the get a Tootsie Roll. I'm sad how many parents either don't realize their church has a library or don't care! My family uses our church library instead of a regular library because of the personal connection we've developed with our church librarian and the fact that there are no late fees!

  3. Reading is so important. It's how kids pick up language. This sounds like such a good program.

  4. This sounds like a great program. My parents always read to me from an early age and I think it's why I'm a voracious reader today.

  6. Ha! I totally used to play library, too! But I definitely agree in introducing reading to kids early. Every time someone I know has a baby, I add a book or two to their gifts. I loved my books as a kid and it's so important to have those quiet moments.

  7. I can't wait to share my love for reading with our baby! I hope to start young and get her involved in reading as soon as possible because I loved all of my books when I was a kid.
