Okay it got me

So I never jumped on the Twilight band wagon. Not sure why. Somewhere in my mommy lala land I totally missed the book until Breaking Dawn was coming out. Seriously, never heard of it all until that point. I even lived in Arizona at the time, where the author is from in case you didn't know.

My husband and I recently watched the movie. I liked it, but when it was over I wondered what all the craze was about. A few of my friends said the book is way better than the movie, almost always the case, so I decided to break down and check it out from the library.

I have finished Twilight and well now I have finished the series. I loved it! I can relate really well with Bella, no one ever believes I lived in Mesa and now southern Cali with my pasty white skin.

So it got me. Though I don't know if I would really want my pre-teen reading it.

  1. I have a 10 year old daughter. And I'm not letting her read the book. Too scary I think. And besides there ARE ALOT of sexual closeness/intimacy depicted between Edward/Bella. I don't want my daughter who is 10 BTW...getting any ideas. But I agree with you--A great movie!
Hi! I'm Alexes from MMB! SAw your post about Motherhood and just had to check your blog out! Cool. I think I'll follow! :)

  2. Alexes- thanks for stopping by..and yep you hit all of the reasons right on the head as to why I would not let a preteen read it.

  3. Hmmmm...never saw the movie or read the books. I was just telling my 11 y/o she would probably like it. Now I am having second thoughts about letting her read it.

  4. Lourie I would definitely read it first..I mean a lot of it is fine, but there is an underlying tone of seeing how far you can go with out going too far. And reading some of the kissing scenes.. well yeah I definitely recommend you reading them first and then deciding, but probably not yet.

  5. uh yeah, told my cousin not to let her 12 yr old read it, but she seemed to think the 12 yr wouldn't pick up on a lot of the innuendos. yeeeeaaaah, they've had to have several conversations about the books now...especially breaking dawn, haha, told her so;-)
i LOVED the books. the last was my favorite. i think it's best to wait until they're all out before starting series like that though b/c then you don't have to wait for the next one to come out. like harry potter. i've still never read the last book. i just lost my gusto for them. i know, i'm ashamed.

  6. I haven't read them, but was debating. Now I probably will! I just finished a book anyway, so I'm looking for something new.

  7. Sooo not a pre-teen book series. But hey, it's great for moms. (I didn't get into Twilight until just after Eclipse was released. I almost missed the boat, too.)

  8. I enjoyed the books. My daughter has read them all but the last one and she loves them. She'll be twelve this year. I think it's been a good way to open dialoge between her and I about what is appropriate and what isn't in a relationship.

  9. I'm such a sucker/twilighter! I'm not a huge fan of the movies - but it's a quick fix for when I don't want to read the whole book again! :) As a married woman with my "forever" sweetheart, I can appreciate the hopeless love story differently than girls/women who are still looking for their "Edwards". I don't think it's appropriate for preteens either - unless you're going to take the time to discuss the situations, and teach them.

  10. My little sis started reading them long before I did and loved them. There doesn't seem to be any weird side effects as of yet! I'd argue that there is much more overt sexuality in everyday media than there is in the book. It's implied but generally quite subtle.

  11. Shawna you are right the general media is pretty bad which is why there are a lot of shows I won't want my kids to watch.
But yes they are going to be exposed to it so you can't hide it or deny it you do need to discuss it. And the more open the better off everyone will be.
So yeah, I guess this could be a vehicle; but I just also think there are some things that a delay in when they are exposed is not a bad thing at all.

  12. I loved the series, and they are sitting in a nice row on the book shelf until my 12 yr old is a little older. Yes there is some sexuality but the over ridding theme is wait until your married, and virtue is a good thing. I think that this is one of the reasons so many women young and old like them. we need to remember that there is still virtue out there and not let anyone take it from us.
