How to Give a Bath to a Newborn

When you get to your third child you feel like you have a good idea how to care for your kids...or you realize how completely clueless all parents, including yourself, are. But sometimes even us wise experienced (insert sarcasm) parents can learn new things.

When Ryder was in the NICU, before he was able to be discharged we had to give him a Swaddle Bath. I had no idea what this was, but soon learned. For a Swaddle Bath you undress the baby, diaper and all and then loosely wrap the baby up in a blanket. In the NICU they used fleece blankets, but any baby blanket would probably work. Then you put the baby in the bath-blanket and all. Then you unwrap one part at a time to wash and then recover that part back up.

What does this do? Well, no more screaming and crying from being cold and uncomfortable; which is very important with a premature baby as cold=shivering=using energy to stay warm instead of growing. And how effective is a Swaddle Bath? Ryder was snoring at one point during his bath. The Swaddle Bath really is the best way to give a bath to a newborn.

And here is a little video from Ryder's first Swaddle Bath at home.

  1. Aww! He's so cute. Why don't they tell all parents to do something like that?

  2. Awesome idea! Where were you years ago??? My kids had to suffer all the yelling. Except for my last who was born under water. He loved the water.

  3. You are making me yearn for the baby thing again. That is very dangerous for me. VERY. DANGEROUS.

  4. Interesting! I might have to try that next time. Do you wash the blanket after every use or just let it dry and reuse it?

  5. Looks like a great idea, he didn't even seem to notice he was having a bath. He's still so tiny! And most darling as ever.

You did a great job as it really didn't seem to rouse him much! :)

  10. Of course I wouldn't learn about this until I'm done having kids! Just my luck! That's awesome, though. I think I may have to steal a nephew to practice on. That's just too cool not to share!

  16. It makes sense. I remember the first bath we gave our Little One. It took 45 minutes!! We were reading instructions out of the baby book. So silly!

  19. I wish I had known about this with my preemies! I had one little guy who did not enjoy the feeling of being in the bath seats and he would fling his arms out to the side and look scared to death! This would have really helped him!
