Proud Mommy Moments: The Home Teacher

It's Thursday! Time for Proud Mommy Moments. This is a weekly- every Thursday- meme hosted by Kmama of the Daily Dribbles and myself. This is your chance to brag about your kids and tell us those awesome things they have done or tell us the times that make you oh so "proud"- but hey at least it gives us all a good laugh.

Make sure you grab the button, just copy and paste the code from the button below to add to your post to help spread the word about this fun meme.

I had been a roll- I have had a lot of truly proud moments.... this week... yea, not so much.

In my church we have a program called Home Teaching. Every family has home teachers, a couple of guys from the church, assigned to come and visit their family every month. Their purpose is to make sure the family is good, see if there is anything is needed and to help out however they can. It really is a great program that can help make sure no one is quietly suffering with some need that no one knows about.

Since we moved a couple of months ago, we now have new home teachers and this last Sunday one of our home teachers came (the other was sick and could not come). The doorbell rang, I went to answer the door. Sweet little gentle Alex (I am laughing hysterically at that description) greeted our new home teacher by nearly knocking him over.

Both Lucas and Alex then proceeded to show him their "tricks", by climbing on the couch- leaping off, somersaulting into each other and just about any other loud and crazy thing they could think of.

Kids often to get excited about new people visiting, but this was beyond excitement it was like my children were possessed. The affects of the warnings and threats I would whisper into their ears would only last a couple of minutes at best.

"How old are you guys?" he asked trying to engage the kids.
"I am 400!" Lucas chimed in.
"I am 1,000,000." Alex said not to be outdone.
Lucas went to sit by our home teacher and basically sat on his lap. After he scooted over he proceeded to do everything from accidentally bumping, putting his feet on him, and wildly waving his hand right in his face when he wanted to speak.

He assured us it was fine, he had nephews these ages. No kids himself yet as he had only been married for about 5 months.

I did a mental head slap. Of course he doesn't have kids yet. Come on admit it- you all remember all of the things you said your kids would never do before you had kids- I could just imagine what he was really thinking.

Eventually the visit ended at which time we "talked" with the kids threatening major consequences if they acted that way again.

Really, I do teach my children to behave better than that. I am blaming it on the moon.. or something. All I know is it was such a "proud" moment for me.

What is your Proud Mommy Moment this week?

  3. We had the missionaries over last week, and we have new Elder. There was no climbing on the Elder, but most of the other antics were there. Our other Elder has been with us for a long time now so he is used to the kids. hahaha. There may or may not have been burping. I can't remember.

  6. When we lived in Utah...we didn't have many friends so when the doorbell would ring...it was time for the Mallory and Alex Show!

Their favorite was the Dominos guy.

  7. I've had moments like that, too. Blaming the moon is a good idea. I might do that from now on!

  8. Awww. Mine get excited around visitors.

And really, people w/o kids have no clue what their kids will really do someday!

  9. Oh my goodness, I so feel your pain! I am sorry. I hate moments like that, when you are trying to act lovely and they are acting like nightmares! That kind of hyperness seems to come out in my children when the visiting teachers come. I've never heard them fight more, or need to be jumping on me more.

Someday he'll have kids, and then he'll know. :)

  10. We finally got a new home teacher that WANTS to do it! He's partner was sick, so it was just him. About the same scene happened here that happened to you. Only, add a cat that cuddled up to him. He's allergic, but didn't want us to put her in the bathroom. The kids were all jumping around and acting like they've never seen another person before (wait, is that an Eminem lyric? kind of I think) and they all had to show him their blankets. And he is just a new daddy. A little baby, a week older then Dexter. lol!

  11. There are few things more frustrating than your kids acting out when you are desperate for them to be calm and cooperative. This happens to me every time we meet a new person, see someone we know at the mall, or have to drop by my husband's office. His coworkers must think my kdis are nuts!

Your teacher probably was just given inspiration to enjoy his quiet, peaceful time alone with his new wife for a while. Really, they did him a favor.

  12. Oh no, my children are going to act like that someday. =/ I don't think I've been truly initiated into motherhood yet!

Haha. But that's a cute story, I'm glad that the guy was cooperative. =)

  16. I have moments like that one! Today I was on the phone trying to order something and my 3 y/o was trying to cut my hair. There's a proud moment!

  17. Bwhahahahaha. Wouldn't you have loved to been a fly in his car on the way home as he made that first phone call to talk about THAT family. Love it!

  19. Too funny! I'm sure they've seen this all before, but it's always hard when it's your kids!

  20. Oh I have been there, just today my kids were acting like wild animals at my husbands work. I tried everything to keep them quiet and then just decided to give up and go home before they broke something. So fun.

  21. Sounds like he handled it fine - what a great "test" for him, right? :)

  22. We have had the same home teacher for 17 years. The kids love him! But they have no fear either. They crawl over to him, climb on his lap...you get the idea.
