Parenting With Spiritual Power : Book Review and Giveaway

If you buy a new TV, it comes with an instruction manual.  If you buy a new car, it comes with an instruction manual.  Heck, even the new toaster we recently bought came with an instruction manual.  All of the things in our lives come with instructional manuals--- everything but one of the most complicated "things"that we have-- our children.

I think all of us at times have wished for an instruction manual for our kids; what if I told you there was one?

I was given a copy of the book "Parenting with Spiritual Power" by Julie K. Nelson to review.
In the introduction it warns us about getting caught up in the changing philosophies, parenting styles and whatever is popular at the time and also introduces us to the parenting manual given by our Heavenly Father, the scriptures.

The book is broken into chapters, with each chapter looking at a certain person or scripture story from both the Bible and the Book of Mormon and the principles and parenting powers we can learn.  Chapter 1 talks of Adam and Eve and the lessons we can learn about the Power of Agency. It discusses the idea of offering our children choices and giving them ideas of what they can do and not just a list of things they should not do.  Other scripture stories throughout the book help convey such things as the power of good cheer, the power of correcting with love, the power of perspective, the power of forgiveness, etc.

She briefly talks about the scripture story and then helps show the principles it conveys and concludes with a brief summary at the end of every chapter.

At the very end of the book she also includes 21 discussion questions that are perfect for self reelection, for talking with your spouse, or even would be so perfect as part of a book club or parenting group.

The book is a very quick yet powerful read.  It presents good solid parenting advice backed by scripture references and stories.  For anyone who wants to parent with more faith and with more of a Christ-like approach, I definitely recommend this.

Today I am lucky enough to be able to provide one of you your own copy of Parenting with Spiritual Power.

  1. Yes, they should definitely come with a manual. We are still figuring it out, so my favorite thing right now is that she has no idea we are using her as a guinea pig, she just loves us!

  2. My favorite part is the unconditional love you give and get from them. I love being the one who can heal their broken hearts or kiss a boo-boo away. I also love the endless snuggles and hearing them say I love You when they finally understand what it means.

  3. My favorite part of parenting is actually watching them grow and transform right before my eyes. I will never forget the first time I saw my son touch grass. He was absolutely amazed. Such precious moments to cherish.

  4. I love the spontaneous hugs and the silly things they say. Kids are adorable. I really hope I win this. Jeffrey and I have been praying for help with Keith. We just don't know what to do with him anymore. Sigh. I really hope I win this.

  5. Yes, kids should come with an owners manual :). I've learned a lot since Tori has been in my life... sometimes I feel mean, but when I say I am she disagrees with me... lol :)

  7. I'd love to read this book. We have 2 young children and a third on the way, and I've been looking for a good book on parenting. It seems like so many are "modern" and I like that this one is rooted in tradition :)

  8. What I love about being a parent is the laughter my children bring to our home. That and many more things, but I picked the one that was on my mind the most today!

  9. Parenting helped me grow into a better version of myself because of what it required me to do. Now I have lifelong friends who bless me over and over again. Not to mention--THE CUTEST GRANDCHILDREN ANYWHERE!!!
