Proud Mommy Moments: A Bleeder

It's Thursday! Time for Proud Mommy Moments! But first have to give a quick shout out to anyone new that is coming from The Johanson Journey as I was featured there today-but more about that at the end of the post.

What are Proud Mommy Moments (PMM)? PMM are a weekly- every Thursday- meme hosted by Kmama of the Daily Dribbles and myself. This is your chance to brag about your kids and tell us those awesome things they have done or tell us the times that make you oh so "proud"- but hey at least it gives us all a good laugh.

So grab the button, link up up and enjoy the ride!

My oldest Lucas has always worn his emotions on his sleeve. Not only that but stimuli- espeically too much stimuli-can set him on a tail-spin. Clapping at a talent show-had to leave as he couldn't handle it, birthday parties- ends up crying in the corner, etc, etc. Luckily his ability to cope and deal has greatly improved with age and some extra help.

But sometimes his extremes creep back in. Like the first time he got a nose bleed-he just woke up in the middle of the night randomly with one-- he screamed for about ten minutes and would not let anyone touch him, blood pouring and dripping everywhere. He did a little better when it happened a second time but he still screamed like he was being tortured. It was not a pretty site.

Unfortunately he seems to get nose bleeds fairly regularly (anyone know any reason for this???) -he even got a nose bleed one night when he was home with a babysitter. Tuesday he was at church for a practice for the program the Primary kids are going to be presenting this Sunday and I got a call. Lucas had a nose bleed.

"How is he doing? Is he freaking out?" I asked.
"No, he is doing great, in fact it just about stopped bleeding, I think he will be fine."

Relief washed over me. He wasn't screaming, he wasn't freaking out, he wasn't running around with blood dripping everywhere. He was handling it, handling with maturity and normalcy.

While I was sad he got a nose bleed- I couldn't be more proud.

What is your PMM this week? Link up below.

***And after you link up head over to The Johanson Journey--click here-- as I am being featured along with another great blogger as part of her Friend 2 Friend series! So excited!!

  1. So great, don't you love when you see those signs of them growing up and know that they are going to be able to handle life on their own?

  2. That is good he did not freak out over the last nose bleed.

  3. Isn't it great when they cross a big bridge like that? Sounds like he's maturing very nicely.

I heard nose bleeds could be allergies or from dry air. Have you tried a humidifier in his room?

  4. That's great he's able to handle it better!

I've heard dry air can cause nose bleeds. I'm with Kmama - perhaps try a humidifier?

  5. So glad Janette featured us so I could see & find your blog. It's great!

Great PMM story! So amazing when kids handle stuff like that so well! What a big kid!

  6. We have tons of blood vessels really close to the surface inside our noses and this dry weather just opens the skin up...some of us (Lucas and Emily) are bleeders. Humidifiers, nasal spray and even vaseline...yeah humidifiers are your best bet! So glad he wasn't freaking out.

  7. I hadn't remembered this in years, but now that you mention it I used to get nosebleeds when I was little, then it just stopped as I got older. I don't know why - maybe it's just one of those kids things!

  8. Rewarding as mother to have milestones that prove we are doing the very best we can.

I am there with Kmama and Evonne...allergies or low humidity. Humidifiers are the best defense. Even a cool mist in the room at night.

  9. That's a great moment! I've noticed my 7-year-old daughter has started to stay calmer in situations where she normally would have had a melt-down. Crossing my fingers for this trend to keep progressing. :)

  10. Mia gets nose bleeds for no apparent reason also. She got one at her last soccer game and we sat on the sidelines the whole game trying to get it stopped. Thank goodness that was the last game, because her purple uniform shirt was toast.

  11. Dehydration. Every time I get a nose bleed, my hubby suggest I re-hydrate myself, and they tend to go away after that. Just a suggestion, though.
How wonderful that he has learned to cope with it! I have to be honest, I sometimes feel like running around screaming with one, but alas, the adult in me takes over and firmly plants me by the side of the porcelain throne. :)

  12. I love when my kids make progress with dealing with something difficult. Way to go Lucas!

I used to get nosebleeds all the time, especially in dry weather. My Mom used to put vaseline inside my nostrils, which felt a little funny but didn't hurt at all. You doctor might be able to recommend a spray that keeps his nasal passages moist.

Or you could have them cauterized (did I spell that right?) that's a little extreme though. :)

  13. That's really great that he didn't freak out Em! Wish I knew how to help him not get anymore!

  14. YAY! for no freak out!
I used to get really bad nosebleeds -- but it was from a red dye that they don't use anymore. (Childhood was awful, I couldn't have pop or chocolate! sigh)

  15. Found you over here from Janette's blog! I would have had the PERFECT post to link up with this, but I posted it yesterday! I will have to join in again next time! I love this idea! :o)

That is awful about the nosebleeds! I'm so glad he is handling it better. My daughter gets them when she is around too much pet hair, or when her nose is especially dry (changing seasons, etc). I'm not sure if that's what causes your son's, but hopefully ya'll can figure it out!

I'm off to check out some of your other posts now!! :o)

  16. What a big boy!

Nosebleeds are the worst. Punky used to get them at night a lot.

    Have you tried a humidifier?

  17. YAY for not freaking out!!

I used to get nose bleeds when I was a kid. But I was a picker. But I noticed if I would pick my nose dry, and didn't pick anymore, the dry air would cause a nose bleed.

My son also gets nose bleeds. Although he claims not to pick his nose when he gets one, they happen at night. I'm assuming it's the dry air.

  18. Awww! I would be proud, too! I don't know why kids get nosebleeds. My son doesn't really get them like that. That would scare me, too!

  21. Aww, poor little guy! Nose bleeds are scary for kids. I used to get them quite often as a kid too. Good to hear he handled it like a pro :)

  22. Yay for that moment!

One of mine can't take noises like that. It was a big step when he could be in a room with more than a handful of people and not have his hands over his ears.

  23. Aww, poor kiddo! I'm so sorry he has those nosebleeds! Glad he is getting better about them... they must have been frightening the first few times!

Mine were from my allergy meds - and goshdarn were those annoying!

  24. Good for him! Maturity is a beautiful thing.

  25. I'm glad to know mine aren't the only ones that overreact a bit, and glad he was able to handle it well in public!!

  26. Sweet thing, bloody noses stink! Glad though that he was able to handle it okay!
