Food And Photography

I hope you have been enjoying these guest posts as much as I have.  My last guest poster is someone I found because she was already following my good friend CA Girl.  I think I clicked a comment she left on Lourie's blog and have been going to her blog ever since.

Introducing Nicole of Life's a Beach

Nicole is a food loving, picture taking country girl.  I love reading her posts about growing up and living in the country as it is so different from my life.  She has a big extended family and friends and they always have the best get together with food and food pictures that will make you hungry every time.  She is someone I know I can count on to always come through and to be true to her word.

Enjoy her post.

Wow, this hit a spot with me.  Now... I am absolutely no pro (although I'd love to be) but one of my favorite things to do is to photograph my food at restaurants number 1 and secondly a lot of times I will write a review on my thoughts about that particular restaurant if I haven't written one previously. Honestly, that's great publicity for your restaurant in my opinion.  Free advertising, because you're not paying me anything (yet, call me... lol).  The first review I wrote was last June for a Cajun style restaurant in my area.  I wrote the review, posted it on their facebook site and they loved it.  In fact, the next time I went in and from there on out the owner has remembered me.
So, I pondered what I read in the magazine for a while and then kind of let it be.  Since then, I've still photographed my food, still written my reviews, but been a little leery at the same time.  Now I live in, as I always joke, podunk Missouri, so obviously not NYC or LA, but I still wonder if at some point someone is going to get on to me.  I absolutely hate getting in trouble. So jump forward a few weeks and I caught an edition of The Chew one day and they were talking about food bloggers and blogging in general.  At the top of the hour they always address current topics and they just so hit on this very topic.  I've included the video.
I absolutely LOVE what Mario Batali says!!  I can tell you when I take my photos, that I don't use my flash.  Flash generally tends to make your food not look that appealing...  This isn't the best example, but you will notice that the flash is on because I forgot the camera I was using automatically puts it on unless you turn it off (a point and shoot).  I had just received this camera for Christmas so I was learning the tips and tricks of using it.
I just makes the food look a little funny and makes some of your background lose its detail.  Like I said, this isn't a great example, however I'm at a loss to find an example because very seldom do I use the flash on my food and seldom do I use this camera for the photos either. Now one night, I really think I should have used the flash, over the restaurant lighting because my photos turned out funny looking in my opinion, but at the same time, I try to be courteous to other patrons and not set my flash off.
But, with restaurant lighting, sometimes you have to take what you can get.  Sometimes it's a win situation and sometimes it's a lose situation. So with all of this, I've decided to go ahead and keep on posting my restaurant reviews.  I guess if a restaurant tells me that I need to delete those photos, that's when I will be respectful of their wishes and delete the photos, but until that time happens, I'm ready to keep on snapping away.

What are your thoughts on all of this?

Thank you again Nicole!  I know I rarely get good food pictures as I just want to eat it!

The Guest Post That Makes Me Cry

Today's guest post is from a lady I definitely want to meet someday.  She is someone who I have chatted with, faced- timed with, and just have grown to know and love so much.  She is my partner in crime with Heartfelt Acts and we are both always looking for new things to keep us excited and motivated for blogging.  Her kids are adorable and she says "ya'll!"  If you don't know Janette of the Johanson Journey then hurry to her blog (after you read her post here of course).
When I was thinking about chatting with blog pals of EmmyMom, I thought—”gosh, how can I entertain them, what kind of a witty story could I share.  Perhaps I’ll just run through a few of my favorite posts but then I got to thinking that I’m not sure I have enough favorite posts to share.”

Isn’t that sad how your mind rolls through what the best thing to write for a guest post is and you come up shorthanded?  Well I got to thinking more about it and being asked to be a guest on someone’s blog is like having a friend over for lunch or to watch your house while you are gone for a weekend.  The person who asks you to be a guest in her home/blog is really a true blog friend.

There it was… my ah-ha’ moment of what I wanted to share with you all today.  I got to thinking about how long I’ve known our dear EmmyMom.

I went back in my email history and found emails dating back to April of 2011.  So, we’ve been pals for 2 years and how we found each other or where we connected escapes me but I honestly can’t remember my blogging days without her.

Emmy, I fondly refer to her as has been such a great friend.  I could easily spot her kindness with emails and sharing discussions about our children.  I think I remember once when I was pregnant with Rayne and we hadn’t found out if we were having a boy or a girl.  I remember seeing her son’s name Ryder and thinking, “ I might steal that name!”.  I have three children like Emmy and each of my kiddo’s names begin with the letter ‘R’ and when it came to another R name for a boy, I was blank.  I know Ryder would have been in the running if we had found out it was a boy.

I’ve been asked to be apart of Emmy’s annual Review Extravaganza which I urge you to stick around because I know it will be bigger and better this year and can only hope to be apart of the success as the years pass by.

Emmy has been there for me when I have hit lows with blogging or had questions or needed advice on how to handle blog situations.  She’s someone who understands when I vent about my kiddos and easily relates to me as I do with her in our Mommy Moments and thankfully she has helped me to find more things to Smile about in life.

I think finding a friend you can count on for support in your blog and in your personal life is key.  I have always read about blogging tribes and finding a tribe and sticking with them.  I can say for sure Emmy is in my tribe and when new adventures come along or ideas, I know I can count on her.  I can’t imagine anyone more perfect to partnering with for our Heart Felt Acts each month.  Together we have set personal goals and hope that between us we can encourage others to spread good.

I’ve found my true blog friend.  I may have only met her via a few Facetime encounters while trying to figure out how to work the app on my phone or texted back and forth but in two years of history together, I know if I saw her in person, I could hug her and giggle on the couch for hours with out a worry in the world.

Have you found a friend or two like that in the blogging community?  The true friends you find here are the ones who will make you want to keep going when it gets tough to come up with something to write for a post.. they make it worth it!

Love ya Em!

Okay, this totally made my day and made me almost cry, in a good way of course!  Thanks so much Janette!  Love you too!!

Guest Post: How I Met My Husband

Beautiful, sweet and kind, fun, a mother of two adorable little guys; someone who I want to meet in real life, these are just a few of the things I would say to describe Natalie of From Cooperate to Domestic.   I don't remember how Natalie and I first came upon each other's blogs but we have been following each other for over two years and her blog is one I make sure to never miss.   Her blog tells about her journey from the cooperate world into the role of a SAHM.   Today she is sharing how she met her husband; I always love stories like this!!

I was in my spring semester as a freshman when one of my friends begged me to attend our college's basketball game for her birthday. I remember really not wanting to go, but finally gave into her constant begging. I mean who wanted to go cheer on our really small school's team that let's just say it...was not very good. We sat in the third row behind two girls and one guy. I was minding my own business when the guy in front of me asked, "Do you have the time?" I actually wore a watch those days and now I couldn't tell you the last time I did. This guy who sitting between two pretty sorority girls by the way, kept turning around to talk to me. I thought is this guy seriously here with two girls and now trying to flirt with me? What kind of smooth operator does he think he is?

Then I had a flashback from fall semester of this same guy at a Student Council meeting spinning in his seat looking back at me. Yes I was a nerd and was on the Freshman Council of SGA (Student Government Association). What a great place to meet guys, no?

Anyhow, a few weeks later I attend the local night life establishment that can best be described as a hole in a wall. You couldn't move or breathe for that matter due to all the people and smoke. What's crazy is we wouldn't get there until 11:30pm when the place closed at 1am! I was dancing with my girlfriends when I saw the guy from the basketball game staring at me. My friends said he is so checking you out. At the end of the night, he approached me and used this smooth line, "You dance as well as you tell time." In my mind, I probably didn't do either that well. He asked me where my friends and I were headed after the place closed, and I told him what frat house we were hitting up.

Keep in mind that at my small college, fraternity boys do not go to other fraternity parties. I guess it is too much competition between them that usually if you attend someone else's it ends up in some kind of fight. The guy from the game was in a different fraternity from the party we were attending. But guess what...when we arrived at the party the guy was there! I couldn't believe it. I had some friends tell me that I MUST dance with him because he was a good dancer. He started dancing with my friend and I which I thought was really sweet because she wasn't there with a guy. We danced the whole night and had a great time. And yes as a matter of fact he was a great dancer!

A few AOL instant messages later (yes I know I am from the stone age) we were seeing each other around campus. He would call me on his way by my dorm to see if he could see me on his way to his fraternity house. We then both went back to where we met, a basketball game. I had to go to the bathroom so I asked him to watch my big red bubble coat that I just had to have that past Christmas. As I was walking back, I see him wearing my coat singing, "Fat guy in a little coat." I busted out laughing at the sight of him in my coat.

A few weeks later we became exclusive boyfriend/girlfriend. We were inseparable, and I remember that first summer away from college seemed like an eternity.
Natalie on Her Wedding Day
Twelve years, two dogs, and two boys later I now call this guy at the basketball game my husband. I never knew how attending a sporting event could change my life forever. I'm so glad I went to the game because if I had chosen to just relax in my dorm room I may have missed the opportunity of finding my best friend and soul mate.

10 Things to Make Me Happy Right Now

I am spending the week in Chicago visiting family so I thought I would take this week to introduce you to some bloggers I love.  It will be a great week of awesome guest posts so make sure you come back to enjoy them all and get to know some new ladies.

First I get to introduce you to Maegan from SAHMaegan.

Maegan is a mom of one adorable little guy, she shares recipes, books she likes, and cute pictures of her little guy.  I hadn't read Maegan's blog until very recently; she and I met when we had seats next to each other at the Elevate Blogging conference; we started talking and ended up talking throughout the day and are already planning some girls nights together!  Enjoy her post, leave some comment love and definitely check out her blog.

*********************
Hi there! I'm so happy to be here on Emmy's blog today, what a treat!  I met Emmy about a month ago at the Elevate Blog Conference and we had a great time together.  We emailed after that we were sad we lived so far apart, but as it turns out, we only live 1/2 hour away from each other.  Crazy, and awesome!  So we're meeting up in a couple weeks for lunch and pedi's ... girls day!
******************
Emmy has a fun monthly link up called "10 Things to Smile About" so I thought I would go that route with my guest post contribution today . . . here are

10 Things That Make Me Happy Right Now!

  1. Dry Roasted Edamame Wasabi flavor.  Hot and spicy?  Heck ya, but I can't stop munching!!
  2. Toddler soccer!  While it doesn't start for another couple weeks, I'm super excited for "mommy & me" soccer this summer with my little.  He's 3.5 and he loves to run, kick, headbutt; this should be perfect for him.
  3. Instagram.  I'm totally addicted, it's like quick blog updates in little fun pictures. Confession - I check IG before I get out of bed. (I'm @SAHMaegan)
  4. Salmon Panzanella.  One of my favorite go-to recipes, but I make it more in the summer than any other time of year.
  5. Poppy Cat.  Our just turned 1 year old kitty, she is a furball of joy and happiness.  I love her.
  6. Michael K. Reynolds.  He is just a superb author, his first novel Flight of the Earls blew me away (my review here), his second novel In Golden Splendor (sequel!) releases July 15th.  I've pre-ordered and I can't hardly wait!  Do you like historical fiction?
  7. Exercise.  I run a lot, sometimes solo and sometimes with the jogger stroller, I do Jillian Michaels cardio programs, I've just started P90X, if I don't have the energy for an intense workout then I just go for a brisk walk (pushing the jogger stroller for added resistance) ... when I finish P90X I'm going to join the local Y so I can take up swimming again.  Exercise, it does a body good!
  8. Vacations on the horizon!  We're going RVing for 5 days over the 4th of July holiday, going to Chicago for a week in August, and we've just started talking about a quick 1-2 night trip to Vegas this summer, sans toddler.  Working on the grandparents, hoping we can get that on the agenda.
  9. Pyrex.  I first saw it on Instagram (of course) but now I'm seeing it at the Good Will and local thrift stores.  It's become a fun hunt to find a good piece of Pyrex (I've passed over many that have, sadly, seen better days) and my collection is growing.  Also making me smile, finding a piece for crazy cheap!
  10. The Bible.  I started a "read the bible in 2 years program" this year, so far I'm on track. But most importantly, I'm really enjoying it, savoring the message, learning and re-learning bible stories; strengthening my walk with Christ. It's been a beautiful thing.
  11. My cousins wedding!  This weekend I get to be with family members near and far as we celebrate my cousin, Steve, getting married.  Yay!!
  12. Suits!  The return of Suits on July 16th, I can almost taste it it's so near.
  13. Gel Manicures.  Need I say more?
OOPS!!  I was only going to mention 10, I got carried away ... so there's 13.  And since a blog post is not complete without pictures, here's a fun little collage of some pics from my IG feed.

I hope you enjoyed my happiness post, hop on over my blog or find me on Instagram, I look forward to meeting you!  Happy week!

When Legoland is Closed....

Do you remember when I told you how right after school got out we almost had a Clark Griswold experience?   Thankfully we checked a day ahead and realized our plans of a surprise trip to Legoland would not work since Legoland was closed on that particular day.  But we still have fun and discovered a new destination- which I am telling you about on Becca of R We There Yet blog today.

Need a Smile?

Okay- I am almost ready to be back and blogging with a vengeance... or just regularly again as really I am not a vengeful kind of gal. I have many many things to share actually- things about the beach, things about movers who spell shoes "sho" and my Easter wreath-"reef" and other great stories. Plus Ten Thing to Smile about will be this Tuesday!!! So please please play along- a great way to look back on and recap the month. You can read more about it here if you need to.

But to finish off my round of great guest bloggers (thank you ladies!!) I am going to introduce you to Amy of Involuntary Smiles today. Amy's blog is my go to blog when I am needing inspiration and wanting to get back into a good place as a wife and mother. Amy truly is doing a wonderful job making her kids childhood magical- but she is totally real at the same time. So read her post here first and then definitely check out her blog!

The day had been very long. Too long, if you asked me. As an act of mercy, my husband set up babysitting and took me out. Indian food.

Indian food will always bring a smile to my long face. No matter how long it is that day. There is just something about the smell and taste of curry that will put a smile on your lips. It could be the hot spicy goodness, or the unique combination of flavors that make my lips curl upwards. Regardless, it makes me happy.

As we were driving down the busy road, elbowing our way through the sea of cars, the title of a song popped into my head.

“Happiness is a Warm Gun.”

Now, I love the Beatles, but I will admit that John Lennon was a strange fellow. A musical genius, yes, but a strange fellow. Disregarding the interesting lyrics, the title got me thinking.

Happiness is…

There are so many things that could end that sentence.

Money, prestige, fame, things, etc. The list is never ending and different for everyone.

I pondered what happiness is for me.

Happiness is a little body snuggled in so close, arms tightly wrapped around my neck, and the smell of fresh washed baby dominating my senses.

Happiness is sitting in a pew at church with two little monkeys crawling all over me, knowing that they are happy, and learning about God.

Happiness is a new skirt ruined by tiny sticky hands impatient to show me their morning masterpiece made out of breakfast cereal and red staining fruit.

Happiness is another muddy floor filled with a dancing husband and children.

Happiness is a strong crooked arm to snuggle close into at night.

Happiness is being able to make the necessary sacrifices to stay home and love and teach and squish those little monkeys to pieces.

Happiness is an exhausted body at the end of the day from trying to keep the house clean, the children alive, and my mind from exploding.

Happiness is creating a safe and secure childhood filled with magic for my children in this scary world.

To me, true happiness will always start at the home, and end at the home.

I am so glad that song title popped into my head, because I really needed the reminder at that moment.

And more than the curry ever could, my list if Happiness is what turned around my day.

See--Amy is great! Head over to her blog and leave her some love!

CA Girl, Kids and... dogs!

Yesterday I unpacked 10 boxes! Okay that is a lie- I didn't do any... but I did go to pool days with a bunch of families from my new ward (congregation).

So anywho- in order to try and get something done today--which might not happen at all if Ryder isn't feeling better- I have another great guest post. This lady is definitely one of the things-though she is a person not a thing-that I miss most about my old home. When we moved to California a little over two years ago we found out that we would be living in the same town as Eric's cousin. We all got together for a family dinner and our boys adored each other. In fact- it was their friendship and how well they played together that made us decide we had better get together again--and well let's just say soon we were arranging play dates for the boys as we wanted play dates!

Yes, today's guest post comes from my BFF Lourie of CA Girl! She is the creator of The Status Quote- I just join in for the fun- and I really enjoy reading her blog and think you will to if you don't already. So here is her post.
cagirl

Have you ever realized how much kids are like dogs? I was thinking about this the other day. Kids, need to be house broken(potty trained) much like our furry friends. They have to be trained to sit(still) and (when) to speak. They respond well to certain phrases. A dog hears, "walk" and will likely jump and turn in circles at the mere thought of going on a walk. A child might do very close to the same thing if they hear the word, "park."

When you go on a walk with your kids; particularly if they are under age 5, it is crucial that you stop and inspect every crack, line, bug, weed and flower along the way. Time is not an issue here. Unless it is well spent on meandering and scrutinizing the small and minute.

Dogs are often amused by simple games. Fetch. Chase. Our children love simple games. We can do the simplest things that will amuse them for hours and we are their best friends for it.
Dogs can often be noisy. They will bark to be heard. Bark when someone is coming. Bark to bark. Children will be noisy to be noisy, to be heard and because someone is coming.

If you don't wash your dog regularly enough, he will start to smell funny. The same goes with children. Not sure which smell is worse. Smelly dog, or sweaty kid.

Dogs and children are great mess makers. It's their passion, their purpose, and their pleasure. When they are done with a toy, they don't put it away, they leave it in our path to step on so we know they used it. It shows their appreciation.

They make big sad eyes at you when you are about to scold them or leave. Trying to lay guilt on you. The big eyes also come out when something is wanted.

When you have been gone 5 minutes, or 5 hours(if only!) upon your return they crowd around you, jump on you, speak at once, and will even climb into your lap if you manage to sit down before they knock you over.

Yes, dogs and kids are an awful a lot alike. They love us unconditionally, make messes, and noise. They can be stinky but they are ours forever. But be forewarned parents. I hear teenagers are a lot like cats.

Lourie's kids- a picture I actually took back before I redid my logo

So go visit Lourie's blog and show her some love- you will be glad you did!

Rachel's Way-- Often makes me hungry

Okay in order to ensure I keep unpacking-after all I did spend more than an hour a few minutes trying to catch up on blogs yesterday- I have a few more guest posts lined up for this week. But don't worry- I will be here this week for Proud Mommy Moments- so get thinking for that-- but today for all of your reading pleasure I have someone who I truly love and who is the reason why I started blogging. My SIL Rachel writes about her life, her amazing projects, and shows her amazing food photography on her blog The Rachel Way. And if you read my guest post at MiMi's yesterday- it is her guest post here that I totally stole my inspiration from (but I told her I was going to do it!)

So her is the fabulous Rachel!

I'm so excited to be guest posting here on Emmy Mom's blog. She's a great blogger, a talented mother, and a fabulous sister-in-law and friend to me. And she inspires me with her photography! So thanks to Emmy, for letting me join in on her blog.
Today I just wanted to share with you:

A Bunch of Somethings (that I like)

Something that makes me smile
Something that makes me laugh
Something I love to watch
Something I love to eat
And best of all . . . something to make me fat!
Hope everyone has a great day with a few of their favorite somethings.

Did you see those food pictures?? She seriously could take food pictures for magazines or cookbooks- you can see more- but seriously be prepared to drool on her food blog here.

Thanks Rachel for being my guest today!

A Little Bit of France Anyone?

Are you ready for another great guest blogger? Did you see my first guest on Wednesday? I hope so, and I think you will greatly enjoy this blogger too. Today's special guest is MiMi of Living in France. She-or a flat version of her- came and visited me this year- the kids and I showed her a great time. So definitely go and check out her blog-after you read her post here of course.

Hi everyone!! For those of you who don't know me, I'm MiMi and I reside on the blog Living in France. No, I don't actually live in France. It's a long story. Actually, I live in Oregon, which is part of my story here.

I thought I'd tell you all (y'all? we don't actually say y'all in Oregon. yes, we are lame enough to say you. all. 2 words.) about something that happened to me a couple months ago. And sort of continues off and on.

You first have to know living in Oregon, we have no accent. None. We are the most boring talkers, like, ever. Because of that I am fascinated and sort of obnoxious about any accent at all. Don't even get me started with the British or Australian accents!

So there's this new family who just began going to our church. They just recently moved here from Mississippi. They needed to go where he could get a job, and unfortunately, for them, it's here!

But very fortunate for me! The whole stinkin' family is adorable. And. She has this dripping with molasses sweet, awesome accent.

I make it a point to start a conversation with her when I see her just to hear it. I don't even know if I know what she's said as much as I'm just listening to her twang.

The embarrassing thing is this: I can't talk to her without adopting the accent. I swear. I can't control it, it just happens.

She says, "Hah, how are yeeuww?" <--- forgive me, i can't figure out how to spell the accent. if that makes sense.
I'm like, "Oh, ahm fahnnn!!"

And it's embarrassing. Because as soon as it comes out, I turn bright red (I can feel my cheeks light up on fire) and then to avoid the awkwardness, I spew forth with an even more awkward:
"Omagoodnessican'tbelieveididthat! I can't control it! I didn't mean to sound like you! Although I wish I did sound like you because youraccentisadorableandi'msosorry."

Yeah. I'm smooth. Like Ex Lax.

Diarrhea of the mouth, anyone?
Yes, please. Table for one.

Thanks so much, Emmy, for having me today! I promise if you come visit me at my blog that I won't mimic you if you have an accent. But that's only because I can't hear it.

Ready to be-Buried With Children?

Today all of our things are being loaded into a truck and taken to our new house! An exciting-and very sad- day. I obviously won't be around much- so decided this would be a perfect time for a guest post.

I would like to introduce you to Jen of Buried With Children-she is one of my MUST reads.

She has four kids-three of whom, well they were born the same day, yes triplets! She writes about what life is like with triplets and funny every day life stuff. I love the videos she makes and I truly enjoy reading every post she writes. So after reading her awesome guest post, definitely head over to her blog and check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Just a Normal Outing when Triplets are Involved.

Triplets.

Oh my bleep diddy bleep bleep bleep triplets!

Those were pretty much my first thoughts when I found out that I was having triplets. To put it mildly, it pretty freaking crazy.

But the triplets came and we survived, still are. How? Not really sure but it involves a great sense of humor, coffee (lots of coffee) and wine.

One of the ways that I kept my sanity was by figuring out a way to get myself, my triplets and my two year old son out of the house. I would try and do this weekly, if for nothing else to give my oldest son a chance to run around and jump on things that didn't include our living room couch or a baby.

What I would usually do was go and meet my sister at the mall.

I had two double strollers, two babies in one, my oldest son and another baby in another one then she would have one and I would have one and off we would go. Just walking the mall.

It really was a great out. I was able to clear my head and have adult conversation. Win. Win.

But there was one problem to going out, it was always over a feeding time.

We would stop our little stroller train at a play area, let Hayden (my oldest) play and my sister and I would begin the process of making bottles and feeding each baby. I was actually happy for my sister's help because with two of us feeding it would go faster.

Things would be going along fine but because we were out with triplets and a two year old and just plain old tempting the fates something would happen. Something would always happen.

On this particular time, I was sitting in a chair holding baby Jake upright and burping him while with my other foot I was rocking the stroller to quiet an annoyed baby Quinn.

Suddenly, my rhythmic tapping on Jake's back was interrupted by a very loud SPLAT!

I quickly turned my head to see that Jake had not only burped but decided to purge the contents of his stomach, aka a 6oz bottle, onto the floor.

My sister and I looked at each other and without a word, we both knew that we needed to run. She went to gather Hayden as I tucked babies into seats and like a flash, we were gone.

As we walked out of site, I noticed someone sorta slip in the baby vomit pile and did the only thing I could, I yelled,

"CLEAN UP CREW NEEDED BY MALL PLAY AREA!"

What I have triplets what more do you want from me?
